Friday's child is full of woe.
THE PACT
He lies in a corner. Except for his gray pallor, and bloody, matted hair, he looks
asleep. When she strokes his face, though, his skin is cool. Mere clay.
Each victory costs a sacrifice. This is hers.
Miles sits nearby, crying in pain--but not from his wounded shoulder.
He meets Ezri's eyes. "He died shielding me. It was very quick. He didn't suffer,
Ezri. I promise."
"We made a pact," Ezri whispers, eyes aching. "We told each other we'd both
come home alive."
She kisses his forehead. "Oh, Julian," she says. "You broke your promise."
Finally, she begins to cry.
