Martian Manhunter--
DC Direct
Meat and Potatoes; 5.0
Perks; 3.0
Homer Factor;4.8
Description; J'on J'onnz done RIGHT .   Figure is 7" of very, very, very well-crafted muscle.  Oh, and the figure has heft.  In addition, the head is sculpted just as the figure should; very pronounced brow-ridge with penetrating, piercing eyes.  Painting is a nice dark green, wth J'onn's simply costume painted in deep blue.

Figure comes with almost no accessories; the cape is unfortunately permenantly attached to the figure.

So what is the big deal about this guy?  He's just Superman from Mars, right?  Waaay wrong.  ... ok, that's the way things started, and was status quo for quite sometime.  He was the obligatory alien-looking dude, made a few appearances in comics here and there, got info the JLA, whatever.  Then something odd happened; DC kept on revamping... and revamping... and revamping the JLA.  Some incarnations, like the Giffen version, were fun.  some, like the motley crew containing Steel and Vibe, were pretty lame.  Think 'The Real World' meets 'The Super Friends.'  Through all these changes, writers kept bringing J'on J'onzz back.  Maybe it was to maintain some minimal continuity, whatever.  As time went by, all of a sudden, a CHARACTER emerged.  He wasn't just The Green Supes.  He had a good sense for leadership and tactics and a wonderfully wry sense of humor.  Soon, the Martian Manhunter became  almost a samurai; a very thoughtful warrior.  Even with the newest version of the Super Seven JLA, J'on is the only person, besides Superman, that Batman will defer to... and the same holds for every member of the JLA.  Within the JLA, the Martian Manhunter has turned into a very fun character... just don't mess with his Oreos.  DC Direct decided to honor this quiet warrior with a figure.  Not perfect, but veeeeeery good.

The meat and potatoes of this piece are the best.  The sculpt is exactly what the Martian Manhunter should be.  Usually, J'on is reduced to being Jean-Luc Picard, except beefier and green.  No, that's NOT what he looks like.  This figure is 7" with enough muscle-tone to freak-out Sly Stallone from his Rocky/Rambo days.  The best, though, is the head sculpt.  The Martian Manhunter has a VERY pronounced brow-ridge, and that is duplicated here.  Rather then looking like a Neanderthal, the ridge coupled with the red eyes give J'on a very thoughtful, intense look on his face.  The articulation isn't great, but decent.  Shoulders, hips, knees, and elbows have a decent range of motion, although I would have liked more in the hips.  Oh, the figure also has nice ball-joints in the shoulders.

The perks... well, there's a problem.  Like
Superman, he's too powerful to really need anything.  The one thing I wish they did,  is give J'on a removable cape.  The cape is very well sculpted, giving a terrific billowy appearance, but having it removable would be a neat little extra.

Homer factor?  Ok, I'm a softy for this guy.  As I fanned in my intro, he's become a great character within the JLA.   He, along with  Bats and Supes, make up the Big Three within the JLA as far as running things.  Granted, Supes and Bats occasionally butt heads... ok, it's NORMAL for them to butt heads, but the Manhunter is the one to put things in perspective, and has the presence to pull it off with the two giants. .

So all in all, the unsung hero gets his just due in a very good figure.  Ok, it could have been better, but not by much.
