~A Few Notes ~ about what's here, and helpful info in general, too ~

Using Geocities Basic Editor is a very easy way to build your page.

There are also a lot of good HTML editors available, a lot of them are free, so you can build your pages on your computer and upload them to Geocities.

Geocities new GeoBuilder Editor is supposed to be very easy, too. BUT, you can't use it unless you're using one of the higher version browsers - Netscape or MSIE version 4+. And, GeoBuilder has more problems than you can shake a stick at. So I won't recommend using it. There's more details about it below.

I'm going to cover the Basic Editor in these pages.
Show you uploading with Geo's Upload Utility. Generally explain the File Manager. That will get you moved in within two weeks so you don't loose your homestead, and will give you some time to learn html so you can do what you really want to do.

If you just got your page, then you did get an email from GeoCities with your password on it. That email has good information and url's (http addresses) for lots of information. Go look at those places that they recommend, and read what they have there, too.

Also, did you go into the member profile and change your password like that email told you to? You really should! It's at: 'http://geocities.yahoo.com/home'.
If you haven't changed it, do it now! And don't give it out to ANYONE that asks for it, even if they say they're from GeoCities. They won't ever ask you for it, and no one else but you needs it, not even the Community Leaders! There are people 'out there' that would try to take advantage of a 'newbie', and they can create havock in your life and no one needs that.

Remember! Whenever you edit your page, when you go to view it, your browser will bring up the page from your computer's cache (memory) NOT re-reading the html page. You either have to hit your "reload button" or change your browsers's information to "verify every time". (see image below) Verifying takes fractions of a second, and you will be sure to see the "new version" every single time you view your page. In Netscape, you find that in "Options - Network Preferences - Cache".

Setting your browser to verify the HTML every time you view a web page.

Homesteaders who have signed up for their page, and only slightly edited their index.html page will still receive an email from GeoCities reminding them they have 2 weeks to "move in". GeoCities says, "Remember, moving in requires that they do more than barely edit their index.html Moving in is defined as adding a certain amount to the site. Homesteaders who have not moved in should add more to their site - upload a graphic (and display on your page), build another html page and put up a link to it from the "index.html", or some such."

3 Methods To Move In:

1) use EZ Upload to get your graphic and HTML files to Geocities
2) FTP your graphic and HTML files to Geocities
3) Use GeoCities Editors to create a page

EZ Uploading and FTP'ing your files are covered in other areas.

I am going to show you how to use Geo's Editors

3) Use GeoCities Editors

Tutorials on Inside Geocities' Basic Editor is on other pages - with examples of what you will see + how to use it. Brief explanations:

Using the Basic Editor gives you more flexibility if you want to add your own chosen graphics to your pages (see Uploading) Note: Basic Editor does NOT let you use an image for a background like you see here. You need to use Advanced Editor for that.

  • It's just fill-in-the-blanks, you don't have to know any HTML.
  • You can prepare text in Notepad (NOT word or wordpad - it adds hidden formatting that messes up HTML coding!) on your computer - and then just copy and paste that into the body/text box of the Basic Editor.
  • Edit your index.html page (everyone's first page must be named "index.html") Add more text on your first page - and remember to remove the words you'll see that say "I'm so-and-so and I haven't moved in yet".
  • You can create a second (3rd, 4th, etc) page in Basic Editor - name your file(s) "page2.html" or whatever you want, write about your family or friends!! Put a link to your second page from your "index.html" page. That would help "hold" your pages until you have a chance to learn about the more detailed HTML language coding. Instructions for making links is shown on the Inside Basic Editor page and also on HTML tags Basics on my other site.
  • You can later switch that same page to the Advanced Editor for even more control (after you've learned a bit more about HTML tags and coding).

Geocities' Advanced Editor and EZ Editor are best left to those that know all the basic HTML coding, and are more experienced. After you have moved in enough to hold your site, you can go ahead and try to make a new file, maybe a "test.html" page with them if you'd like! Just be sure you don't replace one of your existing pages with one made with these editors. Once you switch your page Basic Editor page to use the Advanced Editor or EZ Editor - you CANNOT go back to using the Basic Editor for that HTML file. So if you're not ready to write ALL your own HTML, don't switch yet.

GeoBuilder Editor. I would NOT recommend that you use it!

  • To use GeoBuilder, you must have Java, JavaScript and StyleSheets enabled on your browser. You MUST have a version 4 browser or later. It will NOT work for WebTV users, it will NOT work for AOL customers.
  • The "placeholder" (Geoguide) cannot be removed from the top. This is Geo's way to force people who don't know enough HTML to use another editor, to have the Geoguide at the top of their page. With all the server problems that Geo has, where the page freezes at the point where the Geoguide is, that means your pages can't be seen at all at those times!! (a LOT of times!)
  • If you create a page with GeoBuilder, do NOT edit with any other editor or you will have problem when you try editing that page with GeoBuilder again. Be prepared to start your page(s) over from scratch!
  • The Headline doesn't work, although you can go through the process of putting it it, it won't do you any good. Go ahead, waste your time.
  • You can't use cut / copy / paste in the GeoBuilder. Be prepared to type everything from scratch!
  • GeoBuilder often causes javascript errors while editing. Go away, come back later to work on it is the ONLY solution!
  • GeoBuilder is NOT CAPABLE of inserting META tags, which are used by search engines, including Geocitie's engine! You can NOT add any webring coding to a page built with GeoBuilder.
  • You can add a form to a GeoBuilder page, but it will NOT show up for Netscape users, and it doesn't matter, because the form doesn't work for MSIE users anyway!!
  • You can place HTML code in a GeoBuilder file using the text icon. It is highly recommended that you do NOT try to enter Javascript or Applet codes.
  • If you DON'T use Netscape as your browser, expect to have problems using GeoBuilder.
  • If you decide to use a graphic or color background, or put music on the page, or look at the page with MSIE 4.0, then your background won't show up. And if you think you can control which browser your visitors are using ... ha ha - think again!

But, if you insist on using an editor that is going to cause you problems, and probably at a time when you want/need them least ... then go to this site, they have tutorials on GeoBuilder (and the SAME warnings about problems that I have here!!).
