This Months Featured Classic Band Is....
Kaaos began in the spring of 1980 in Tampere, Finland. When Kaaos began they were much
like many beginning bands, not quite certain how to play their instruments, having
lots of practices wasted with just fooling around and getting drunk. After countless
practices like this the band started to take shape. Their main influences being the famous
UK bands Disorder, Discharge, and American bands like Black Flag and The Germs. What
came from the culmination of these influences and some original ideas was what is possibly
the best band to ever come from Finland. With their unmatched insanity and chaos ridden
(and mostly drunken) live performances Kaaos took Finland, Europe, and The World by storm.
Their unique breed of Punk and Hardcore defined what is now known as Finnish Hardcore. On a
cold and bitter Finnish Halloween night in 1981 Kaaos layed down their first studio tracks
for a split 7 inch with fellow Finn's Cadgers(later known as Riistetyt). The 4 tracks on the
Kaaos side were filled with angst, agression, power, and speed clocking in at just under 5
minutes! Lyrics objecting to and calling out the Police, and fighting the tainted communist
ideals of Russia at the time. Kaaos was speaking to everyone of their generation and
understood what was on their minds. After the split with Cadgers, Kaaos decided to
switch their guitarist, Jakke, over to singing instead. The abrasive vocals Jakke brought
to the band would give them their signature sound. A year later and after constant gigging
around Sweden, Norway, and Finland Kaaos went back to the studio and recorded what is
believed to be the best record they record, the "Totaalinen Kaaos" EP. Every song on this
masterpiece showed Kaaos' maturity as a band and with song writing, not to mention their
speed and Jakkes million dollar voice. Totaalinen Kaaos was one of the best selling Finnish
Hardcore records of all time. Kaaos continued to gig around Scandinavia, and even around
Europe, including Germany, Poland, Holland, and France. They went on to record an LP, and a
Split LP before they played their last show in 1985. A few years later in 1993 Kaaos reformed
with Jakke on vocals and some friends from other Finnish bands such as Bastards, Riistetyt,
And Lama. They released the Nukke 7" in 1993 to celebrate their reformation. Nukke had been
recorded 8 years earlier in 1985 but was never released due to financial difficulties. Now
being back in the scene and Gigging a few times a year Kaaos was playing to a whole new base
of fans in Finland and Europe. New faces everywhere, Young punks who knew who Kaaos were. It
was at this point Jakke really realized that Kaaos was no longer just a band, but a Legacy.
In 2000 Kaaos went into the studio for the first time in 15 years to record blazing split
7" with Svart Agression. Kaaos proved they were no longer just a traditional Finnish Hardcore
but could keep up with the new punk bands of the day. Until late 2002 Kaaos were an active band
but as they say "All good things must come to an end", Kaaos finally called it quits after a
21 year Legacy that will never be forgotten. There has been talk of Kaaos playing a few shows
in Finland for the annual "Puntala Rock" festival but it has yet to be seen. Hopefully this
