Bericht Windhoek Observer:

On Saturday and Sunday the 20th and the 21st of September, the semi finals and finals of the SSL ( Social Soccer league) were played in Walvisbay. The winners of the Central League (SKW) had to face runner up of the Coastal League (Youngsters) and in the 2nd semi final Coastal Champions Maritimo had to play Cymot who ended 2nd in the Central League.

In extreme windy conditions the game between SKW and Youngsters never lived up to it's expectations, with SKW not finding their form at all and Youngsters putting up a strong performance. SKW's hopes to reach the final almost faded when Youngsters scored the 1 - 0 lead in the 82nd minute through a superb long range effort, which beat goalkeeper Sven Wiedenroth , who earlier had made a couple of top class saves. A stunned SKW side however launched attack after attack on the Youngster's goal , but failed to score and the unthinkable seemed to come true as it looked liked the side from Windhoek was not going to reach the finals for the first time in many years. With only 20 seconds left in the match, the top goalscorer of 2002, Roger Henckert, once again proved that he has not lost his devastating goalscoring abilities, as he found the net of the youngsters goal with a 25 meter shot.

Seconds later the final whistle blew and the 2 sides had to play extra time of 10 minutes each. It took SKW up to 4 minutes into the 2nd half of extra time to put the final nail into Youngster's coffin with Henckert again scoring through a 30m freekick.

In the 2nd semifinal, Cymot scored twice in the final 10 minutes of their game against Maritimo to secure their place in the final.

The final:

On Sunday morning 10h00 the final started at the Jan Wilcken Stadion in Walvisbay. Cymot and SKW , who had many a close encounter over the past year once again faced each other after a tough season in which these2 sides dominated the Central Social Soccer League.

Cymot had the better start and only the goalpost as well as another stunning performance by goalkeeper Wiedenroth kept them from scoring an early goal. SKW slowly got into the match and became more dangerous as the match progressed. SKW's national striker Arend von Stryck created some excellent opportunities, which however were brilliantly saved time and again by the Cymot goalkeeper. In the 2nd half Cymot' forwards twice broke through the SKW defense just to miss the goalpost by a few centimeters.

With SKW's playmaker and captain, Rolf Beiter, still suffering from an injury, the decision was taken not to play him from the start, but it was evident that the side now lacked creativity in the midfield and Beiter's long distance passes in order to get their speedster Gunnar Wilckens into action. With 20 minutes remaining , coach Richard Starke and assistant Jeorgos however decided to take a chance and to put Beiter on. This proved to be vital, as with his first touch of the ball, Beiter provided Roger Henckert with the pass he'd been waiting for all the time. Henckert managed to beat the Cymot keeper with a cracking shot from abot 20 metres. Once again a moment of magic from Rolf Beiter was needed to clinch the game for his side. Unfortunately the SKW captain was redcarded a few minutes later after a tussle between him and a Cymot defender, which put his side under extreme pressure for the remainder of the game. In the dying minutes of the game Cymot received a freekick from 18 meters, which they however could not capitalize on. SKW therefore won the prestigious SSL title for the 2nd time in a row in a thrilling match against a highly talented side. With the exciting type of soccer Cymot is playng, this side should definitely progress a lot in the future.
