Judas in Prophecy
by Rod Jackson

All verses are quoted from the NASB anything in [square brackets] is added by me for clarity.

During the last supper Jesus said,

"While I [Jesus] was with them, I was keeping them in Your [God's] name which You have given Me; and I guarded them [the 11 disciples] and not one of them perished but the son of perdition [Judas], so that the Scripture would be fulfilled." John 17:12

Jesus here calls Judas the "son of perdition". Also we see that Jesus says that Judas is mentioned in the old testament prophesies...

Judas in Prophecy

"I [Jesus] do not speak of all of you. I know the ones I have chosen; but it is that the Scripture may be fulfilled, `HE WHO EATS MY BREAD HAS LIFTED UP HIS HEEL AGAINST ME.' " John 13:18

Here we see that Jesus applies Psalm 41:9 to Judas Iscariot.

"My [Jesus'] enemies speak evil against Me, `When will He die, and His name perish?' And when he comes to see Me, he speaks falsehood; His heart gathers wickedness to itself; When he goes outside, he tells it. All who hate Me whisper together against Me; Against Me they devise My hurt, saying, `A wicked thing is poured out upon Him, That when He lies down, He will not rise up again.' Even My [Jesus'] close friend [Judas] in whom I trusted, Who ate My bread, Has lifted up his heel against Me." Psalm 41:4-9

After Judas had hung himself and his bowls had gushed out, the other 11 apostles argued that it was necessary for another person to take the office of apostle to fill the vacant spot that Judas had left. Peter said,

"For it is written in the book of Psalms, `LET HIS HOMESTEAD BE MADE DESOLATE, AND LET NO ONE DWELL IN IT'; and, `LET ANOTHER MAN TAKE HIS OFFICE.' " Acts 1:20

Here Peter quotes from two different Psalms. The first is from Psalm 69:25 and the second is from Psalm 109:8

"May their table before them become a snare; And when they are in peace, may it become a trap. May their eyes grow dim so that they cannot see, And make their loins shake continually. Pour out Your [God's] indignation on them, And may Your burning anger overtake them. May their camp be desolate; May none dwell in their tents. For they have persecuted Him [Jesus] whom You [God] Yourself have smitten, And they tell of the pain of those whom You have wounded. Add iniquity to their iniquity, And may they not come into Your righteousness. 28 May they be blotted out of the book of life And may they not be recorded with the righteous." Psalm 69:22-28

"Thus they have repaid Me [Jesus] evil for good And hatred for My love. Appoint a wicked man over him [Judas], And let an accuser stand at his right hand. When he is judged, let him come forth guilty, And let his prayer become sin. Let his days be few; Let another take his [Judas'] office. Let his children be fatherless And his wife a widow. Let his children wander about and beg; And let them seek sustenance far from their ruined homes. Let the creditor seize all that he has, And let strangers plunder the product of his labor. Let there be none to extend lovingkindness to him, Nor any to be gracious to his fatherless children. Let his posterity be cut off; In a following generation let their name be blotted out. Let the iniquity of his [Judas'] fathers be remembered before the LORD, And do not let the sin of his mother be blotted out. Let them be before the LORD continually, That He may cut off their memory from the earth; Because he [Judas] did not remember to show lovingkindness, But persecuted the afflicted and needy man [Jesus], And the despondent in heart, to put them to death. He [Judas]also loved cursing, so it came to him; And he did not delight in blessing, so it was far from him. But he clothed himself with cursing as with his garment, And it entered into his body like water And like oil into his bones. Let it be to him as a garment with which he covers himself, And for a belt with which he constantly girds himself. Let this be the reward of My [Jesus'] accusers from the LORD, And of those who speak evil against My soul." Psalm 109:5-20

This is the full curse that Jesus had pronounced on Judas by saying "woe to him".

So those where the prophesies about Judas. Finally I want to look at what "went wrong" for Judas.
