This page focuses on equipment that will guarantee your survival in the wilderness even under the harshest conditions.

I hope you will find these tips useful. If you have something you think I should add to this site please contact me.

For more information on wilderness survival check out hikercentral , it's the best collection of links I've found on the net so far, but I'm always on the lookout, you can never know too much about survival.

This list of essential items is based on my years of backcountry adventuring.

MULTIPURPOSE TOOL

These tools come in a variety of models, generally Leatherman type tools or Swiss Army type knives. Take a look at these pictures for some examples.

I myself have both a Leatherman Tool and a Swiss Army Knife.

WOOD STOVE

You need to carry a wood powered stove with you. If you are using a propane or other type of fuel stove like most backpackers do, you are without a stove once you run out of fuel, if you are using a wood stove you will never run out of fuel. But be careful, I have seen some backpacking wood stoves that use battery operated fans!!? That defeats the whole purpose, when you run out of batteries you cant use your stove. Plus you. ve got electric circuitry and complex mechanisms to worry about. The only wood powered backpacking stove I. ve come across is the Trailstove by Stratus, I have one myself, it cooks a bit slower than a propane stove but I. m carrying less weight in my pack and I know it will always work. Click on the picture for more info on this stove. If you know of an even better stove please let me know about it and I'll put it on my web site.

CAMP SAW

These are generally very light, if you have one of these with you can build a pretty good hut if you happen to get stuck in the wilderness for a whole winter.
