MILITARY DATA: Dischared 15 Sept 1865, Louisville by special order
1 February 1863: "was marched from Peach Orchard to Louisa 115
miles [difficult to read number of miles??] through snow near knee deep..."
9 or 10 January 1864: His eyes were injured. [probably referring to
skirmish at Turman's Ferry/frostbite, etc.
25 December 1864: He was injured by the explosion of gun powder
when destroying artillery ammuntition "of the enemy
at Saltville, Virginia.
PENSION: Disability for "rheumatism, chatarrah of the head and
rupture and eyes week".
Illness: He became sick with mumps 1 Feb 1863 and then had to
join the march to Louisa from Peach Orchard. He experienced, "terrible
pain and swelling of soldier's testicles which rendered him unfit for manual
labor." Dr. Hereford treated him for mumps at Louisa. Jan 9
or 10, 1864 his eyes lids "grew together which disfigured and injured the
soldier much."[frostbite]. His eyes were again effected, "significantly
injured" by burns during the December, 1864 raid on Saltville by a powder
burn. Witnesses Barnabus Blackburn and Peyton Blackburn testified
saying they saw "claiment in a few days after the Saltville, Va fight and
his eyes were badly burnt, lashes burnt off and face burnt." Achilles
Williams [his brother] "waited on claiment" while he was sick.
