George W. Roberts, Company A

George W. Roberts was born in 1838 in Southwestern Virginia and married Mary Hurt, the daughter of Joseph and Anna Hurt. After their daughter, Sarah, was born in 1859 in Virginia, the Roberts' family moved to Floyd Co., KY, where he lived when he joined the 39th. George's daughter, Barsheba Roberts, would later marry James Baldridge, the son of his 39th unit mate, Thomas Baldridge.

George and Mary Roberts had the following children: (1) Sarah, b. 1859, VA; (2) Jennie, b. 1861, Prestonsburg, KY; (3) Joseph, b. May 1865, Prestonsburg, KY; (4) Barsheba, b. Feb 1868, Prestonsburg, KY; (5) Charles, Oct 1869, Prestonsburg, KY; (6) Laura, b. 1874, Prestonsburg, KY.

After Mary's death in Jun., 1888, a 57-year-old George remarried to 21-year-old Susan A. Music on either 2 Jun., 1893, or 21 Jun., 1894 (depending on the source).

The following is drawn from Presidents, Soldiers, Statesmen, Vol. II (H.H. Hardesty, NY, Toledo, Chicago, 1892):

George W. Roberts

Son of Charles R. and Kate Esterland Roberts, both deceased, was born in Washington Co, VA June 14, 1837. He has been twice married, the first union being in 1859 with Mary E. Hurt who was born in Virginia and passed away in Johnson Co., KY June 1888. She was born in 1830. Of this union were born eight children: Sarah A., Hannah J., Joseph D., Charles R., Besheba, Laura, Margaret - dec., and William A. - dec. He was married secondly in this county Jun 2 1893 to Susan A. Music who was born in this county in 1874. Her parents, David E. and Keziah (Gobble) Music are still living in this county. Comrade Roberts was one of the brave soldier boys to respond to the president's call for troops and was engaged in farming when he was enrolled from Peach Orchard, KY Oct 11, 1862. He joined Co. A 39th KY Mtd V.I., 23rd A.C. He was stricken with fever and was taken to hospitals at Lexington and Ashland where he was treated for 18 months. He was placed in the dead house with several others, where fortunate for him, they found him alive the next morning. He took part in the engagements of Mt. Sterling and all the engagements of his command until taken to the hospital. He was finally honorably discharged at Louisville, KY Sept 15, 1865. He had four brothers in service, Richard in 39th KY Mtd V.I., died in Lexington during the war. William, Henry and James who served under the banner of the Confederacy. Comrade Roberts and wife have always held membership in the M.E. church on a thrifty and well kept farm and his address is East Point, KY.

George W. Roberts enrolled in Company A on October 17th, 1862; mustered-in on February 16th, 1863, at Peach Orchard; and mustered-out on September 15th, 1865, at Louisville. No further records for this soldier. George collected a pension as a resident of the John's Creek Precinct in Johnson County. He stated that his disability was "heart disease."
