Biography

GEORGE W. MARTIN was born on March 3, 1828 and died on Jan 25, 1925 as given on his headstone. He is buried on Buck Creek at Scoville, Ky in Owsley Co. Ky in Maimous Cemetery beside his second wife Esther Cornett. These are the dates on his stones and I have a photo of his stone. His headstone lists Co F 39 Ky Inf also but it is not a military stone. His parents are listed in his pension application below.

He first married on October 12, 1855 to CYNTHIA CAROLINE FRASURE born about 1836, daughter of Robert and Francis Hall Frasure. Her death date is stated in a deed of land to her children as February 4, 1896. Her tomb has never been located yet.

He second married on December 16, 1897 in Owsley Co Ky, ESTHER EASTER CORNETT, b April 15 1856 and died Aug 26 1938 as given on her stone and she is buried beside George in Maimus Cemetery in Owsley Co Ky. She was daughter of National W Cornett and Lydia Caudill of Knott Co. Ky

Information from his Pension application. It is full of information and cost of $40.00 to get the full records. Birth: Civil War Pension File--Affidavit 6 Feb 1907 in Owsley County George Martin States, "There is no knowledge public of baptismal record of my birth and that my father was killed by a tree falling on him when I was 8 years old and there is no family record of my birth. Information on my birth was given to me by my older brother Joel who died last May at the age of 96. That Joel recalled during his lifetime going after the midwife when I was born on March 3, 1831." Another Date of March 16, 1828 listed on Death Certificate.

Marriage" First wife-Caroline Frasure/Frazier, "Vital Statistics of Floyd County 1852-1904, October 12, 1855, George Martin age 20 born on Beaver Creek, married Caroline Frasure age 18 born on Big Mud Creek"

Second wife---Esther "Easter" Cornett", Civil War Pension Files lists date as Dec 7, 1897. Owsley County at Elijah Isaacs, witness by Mary E. Isaacs.

Death: Kentucky Death Certificate lists 25 January, 1925 3am at age 97 in Buck Creek. Owsley County. Physican B. F. Tye of Travels Rest lists cause as Heart Failure. Informant completing certificate--Nathan Martin of Turin.

Death Certificate also lists George's parents as David Martin and Fanny Rose of Virginia. Civil War Pension File lists an affidavit of Bascom Dooley, 46 of Scoville, Ky and H. G. Williams 29, of Turin, Ky 27 May 1925 stated they both dressed and prepared George Martin for burial and that he died 25 Janurary 1925.

Military: Served in the Civil War, Union, Company F 39th Kentucky Inf. Pension Number WC 964-692. Enlisted on Aug 8, 1863. Discharged Sept 15, 1865. Pension ranging from $8.00 to $72.000 monthly due to rheumatism, disease of eyes and shoulders.

Affidavit for Pension: John Owens, 13 September 1890, Knott County, states on a raid to West Va from Louisa Ky, Martin's horse fell and hurt George Martin at a place called Trouts Hill on the Va side mashing his left shoulder.

Affidavit for Pension: Enoch Bolin, commrade, states injury of left shoulder occurred on a scout after a detachment of Rebels, then stationed at Trouts Hill WV by reasons of having to carry excessive amount of baggage. Also stated that on July 1864, George was taken with chronic eye problem.

Affidavit for Pension: Felix T. Begley, Hyden, 23 March 1896. While persuing enemy near Trouts Hill in WV, carrying heavy equipment, George strained his left shoulder.

Affidavit; 1 April , 1910. George Martin, Owsley County, stated in 1850 he was living with his brother Allen Martin in Floyd County, Ky on Beaver Creek. His brother Allen is now dead and has been for many years. He lived at Allen Martins untill 1855. He then married and went to keeping house about one mile from his brother on the same farm and was living there in 1860. George stated his father's name was David Martin and was killed by an accident when he was only 10 years and that his brother Allen raised him. George also stated his mother's name was Fannie Martin (rose) who soon after father's death abandoned housekeeping and lived about with her children until her death.

Physical Descriptions" at age 70, 5'9', 141 pounds, light complexion, blue eyes, gray hair.
