Private Frederick K. Stiltner, Company I

Frederick K. Stiltner was born in Tazewell County, Virginia, April 11, 1826. He died Oct. 12, 1911, in Buchanan County, VA, and is buried in the Stiltner Cemetery on Poplar Creek near the Bethlehem Old Regular Baptist Church. He served as a private in Company I of the 39th Kentucky Mounted Infantry. It's alleged that he first belonged to the army of the Confederate States of America before joining the 39th Kentucky Mounted Infantry to fight against his many relatives in Buchanan County. His brother Matthew belong to the 10th Kentucky (Cavalry?), C. S. A. Out of the 13 known Stiltners from Buchnan County who saw service in the Civil War, Frederick K. Stiltner was the only one who served the Union. His sister Polly Stiltner Clevinger had eleven sons, and eight of her sons were in the 10th Kentucky (Cavalry?), C.S.A. Frederick K. Stiltner allegedly switched from the C.S.A. to the Union for higher pay."
