Private Alfred Pitts


Biography

Alfred Pitts was born the 11th of October 1837 in Floyd County Kentucky. He was the oldest son of Thomas Pitts, born around 1818 and Rachel Sturgeon, born in January of 1815. Alfred was the grandson of Jonathan Pitts, a Revolutionary War Soldier.

Alfred married Melissa Vaughn on the 2nd of July 1861. Melissa was born in March of 1846 in Floyd County. She was the daughter of Leroy Vaughn and Amanda Riddle. At least eight children were born to Alfred and Melissa, they were: Elizabeth, Mary, Letitia, Arminta, Barton, James Erwin, Tennessee and Jeanette.

Alfred enlisted in Company F of the 39th Kentucky on the 25th of June 1863. In 1874 they were living on Middle Creek and in 1890 he appeared in the Special Census of that year. Sometime after 1890, Alfred and Melissa moved to Carter County, both had cousins that already lived in the area

Melissa died on the 6th of October 1912 and Alfred died on the 9th of April 1914. They are both buried in the Pitts-Simmons-McGlone Cemetery in Carter County Kentucky. The cemetery is located on top of the ridge between Brushy Creek and McGlone Creek. Entrance to the cemetery is a gravel road at the mouth of Brushy Creek going up a very steep hill on the west side of the road. The cemetery is past 2 houses at the end of the gravel road.
