Student Expectations

Students need the security of knowing what is expected of them, how they will be evaluated, what pitfalls to avoid if they wish to succeed in a class.  One must always remember, the heart's core of any policy or expectation advocating and promoting education must first, and foremost,  promote goodness, kindness, justice, and an atmosphere of hospitality towards people and ideas.

Expectations
Each student will be expected to do the following:
- come to class prepared with the proper materials and having completed the assignment.
- follow classroom procedures.
- participate in class discussion.
- participate in the activities that have been planned for the day's lesson.
- complete regular homework assignments as assigned. (Late work will not receive full credit.)
- complete long term assignments properly and on schedule.
- follow the syllabus

Materials
Each student should have the following materials for every class:
- texts +/or materials being used for class as assigned
- a notebook for taking class notes (This may be a spiral, loose-leaf, or electronic.)
- a “writing notebook” for daily writing exercises
- a pocket folder for hand-outs
- loose-leaf paper
- working blue or black pens & #2 pencils
- a red pen or pencil for peer editing

Quizzes & Tests
- Quizzes may or may not be announced.
- When a quiz or test is being given all students will take it, whether or not they have been absent.
Students who score poorly on a test will have the opportunity to retest.
(Quizzes are NOT re-done unless valued over 15 points.)
- Students are responsible for making up missed quizzes or tests within one week.
- Students are responsible for contacting the teacher about retaking a test.
- Students are responsible for asking for special help outside of class.

Writing Assignments
- Students will be expected to follow the specific guidelines for each writing assignment.
- The presentation of the assignment must always be neat.
- Some rewrites are permitted.  Students should see the teacher (individually,  #ILT during ILT or after class) regarding expectations or corrections.

Respect
- Students will demonstrate respect for themselves and for all other people in the classroom.
- Students will demonstrate respect for the classroom materials and furnishings.
- Students will demonstrate respect for ideas that are expressed whether or not the student likes the ideas.

Special Items of Note specific to Mrs. Fairman's class at Beaumont

-Late work will drop 5% for each day it is past due.
***There may be special penalties for some assignments, i.e. the research report. A late research report is docked 25% if it is not submitted in its entirety on the due date, and it loses an additional 5% additional day it is late.
-No food or beverage is permitted in the classroom (including water bottles). This is in the handbook.
- Personal items must be stored under the desks during the class sessio n. No large items are to be placed around the room or in the aisles. (Avoid potential safety hazards in the event of a fire drill.)
- Teacher permission MUST be obtained before any technology in the classroom is used.
- No scented creams, hand cleaners, etc. are to be used in the room. (Be attentive to the sensitivities and health needs of others.)
-Students will assist in maintaining a clean and neat environment.
Papers and any other items should be picked up and disposed of properly.

Portfolios and Keeping Documents
The students will be expected to keep electronic documents.  Since the protocols are still being developed for electronic portfolios, it is important that students maintain a realistic timeline for all assignments and keep all materials in order.

 -Typical assignments
Students will submit hard copy of assignments at the beginning of class on the day assignments are due. (There will be some special assignments for which  submissions may be requested by e-mail or hard copy will need to be accompanied by disk, but these will be the exception.) Except for special assignments, ONLY hard copy will be accepted.
  -Portfolio
Students will be expected to keep copies of their work. Procedures will be outlined for organizing a portfolio, storing writing products on a disk, and keeping drafts or other materials for future reference.
  -Ownership
Students have ownership of their own work and will respect the ownership of others. Disregard of a person's individuality in expressing ideas will not be tolerated. Disregard of copyright law and plagiarism will not be tolerated. Upon request, students will be ready to present all notes, working outlines, and drafts relating to an assignment. Notes, working outlines, and drafts should not be discarded until the graded assignment is returned.

Research
It is important to develop good research habits, and to maintain a method or organizing material and time.  To this end, students will be asked to follow the approach to research, note taking, and material organization that is presented specifically for this assignment.  Students should always be attentive to the specific guidelines of each assignment. There are more ways to collect and organize research than there are to skin a cat.

Students will keep 3x5 note cards of all research material.  Material should be always presented in MLA format. The counter is to the beginning math student what the note card is to the beginning research student.  It is a manipulative. It is a tangible tool for organizing the larger project.  The MLA style sheet is used at Beaumont School.

Students presenting more than one Internet source as a cited reference on a paper or report will be required to submit a disk with hot links. Students should be prepared, at any time the request is given, to present hard copies of their sources.

Students will be encouraged to develop their personal a research file. Students should not delete or destroy notes or important drafts until they receive the final grade on their project.

Plagiarism is not tolerated. The student handbook outlines the penalties for plagiarism.

Remember to keep the syllabus handy and manage your time well.
