Money and Identity
During pre-occupation, Money was talk of Tibetan aristocrats and big merchants were as barter system was well established among common peasants and nomads. When Chinese first entered Tibet, they use Yuan (Chinese currency, Dayen in Tibetan language) to clutch by their hidden flaw.
The most common house structure in Tibet is the three-story building. The third floor meant for family members, second for grain-storage, and first floor for cattle’s. Many middle class families gave there third floor room for rent to Chinese and even some has given both floors in thirst to earn more Yuan that they are paid as a house rent, thus adjusting themselves in the cattle house. At beginning, Chinese are soft spoken smiling face with red scarf around their neck. Many children work in their rented house to get a toffee (from china) in return, which was a very rare taste bud.
Gradually, Chinese ploy us by their communicative Yuan and took control over Chu-puan (leader of 10 families) and Gyak-puan (leader of 100 families). There first menace was to collect all weapons like spade to small knives from every family through the respective Chu-puan and Gyak-puan of that particular area even on forceful denial from many such families. There demand escalates into surrendering all dogs including family pet dogs- Second menace. It was emotionally irresistible for many family members to detach from their dogs but they have to give up under duress. It was later known among the peoples that Chinese ate all those dogs!! What next? The work of Chu-puan and Gyak-puan are all over. They were hitherto earning Yuan. At this stage, Chinese used mutual hatred or in fact divide and rule policy among the Tibetans. They are by now confidant enough to obsess the lay-people to consider there Chu-puan and Gyak-puan the scapegoats for the two menaces. Many laymen credulously became the rivals of their Chu-puan and Gyak-puan, hence resulted in going against them and in one occasion, they were beaten in crowd. Chinese authorities soon deposed them. Very soon Chinese oppression begins, followed by a troops that upheaval Tibet completely. The reprisal from our side was too late with outdated weapons and the blowback remains most deploring among us, even today!
Yuan has played its role; confiscated our land and it was never a happy ending like it began. We are now in exile. Under the hegemony of His Holiness, we could form a democratic government in exile, functioning different departments that a community needed in full swing. Since five decades we received many help from different countries. They recognized our distinct religion, culture, tradition and most important, a compassion for all sentient beings- a true Tibetan-ness.
By now, first generations Tibetans are more populous in exile. They have seen the tears of their parent and grandparents while narrating their home at Tibet or the hardship they suffered on their way to exile. Many of us had consoled them and promised to show them their home in independent Tibet.
Now the million dollar questions are whether we are living up to there expectation and whether we are deserve to be called the ‘future seeds of Tibet’?
On retrospection, erstwhile generation has mistaken by remaining so isolated and now this generation in-exile is fallible on over exposure. Going west is a most frequent hot-talk within the settlements without prior ambition except to earn in terms of ‘dollars’. Possibility is there in future that all Tibetan Buddhism text is available only in English or so called distinct tradition, culture and language extinct within a decade or half. Many few may pay heed on preservation of our tradition, culture and language, and many more new generations are more comfortable in loose pant- low hip- Hip Hop status yelling gangsta sign and words. The lack of proper parental guidance is one of the factors because it is learnt that Tibetan parents work more than two jobs or at least overtime to earn more dollars but when it comes to more important, that is parenting, they work only part-time. They are allowing their sheep (so called future-Tibet) to stray far away, and sometimes beyond recall.
His Holiness is restlessly traveling world, spreading Buddhism and featuring our unique culture and traditions. Of course there can be threat on extinction of our religion, culture and tradition in inside Tibet but the same in outside Tibet appears merely as an abstruse set of codes and this could be the most ridiculous lost in the history of Tibetan people in exile. At the bottom line, Yuan confiscated our land and Dollar is confiscating more costlier - our tradition, culture and language. We must not at least repeat the history!
