Chester Searle was the local mail man in the early years of the 1900's. Chester was was an active member of the Oak Lawn grange and attended the Oak Lawn Grammar School. Later Searle brought one of the first motorized vehicles in Oak Lawn. It was an 1908 Orient Buckboard. It had one cylinder, four horsepower and one forward speed. He used it for his mail route and found it “very satisfactory.”

Pawtuxet Volunteer Fire Company with a horse drawn steam powered fire engine, c.1880. This company had thirty-two members and was the predecessor of all fire departments in Cranston.
