The Ride for the Rainforest
About the Ride

To support its projects in the rainforest, Global Awareness Institute (GAI), a not-for-profit organization based in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, will organize and lead ten motorcycles on a 3,000-mile, unparalleled adventure through the Atacama Desert, the driest landmass on earth.

To qualify for The Ride, each bike (one or two riders) must make a $5,000, tax-deductible donation to GAI.  Riders needn’t pay for this out of pocket.  Riders may fund-raise this entry fee in any manner they choose.

GAI will establish the route and destinations for the trip and provide the guide bike and an emergency vehicle with a spare bike. GAI will arrange for national and international publicity, record the adventure as a book and produce a documentary film about The Ride.

All other costs of The Ride must be born by the participants. GAI will assist with air transportation arrangements for riders and bikes and will coordinate all  other  group  activities.   These  costs  can  also  be  fundraised  as  tax- deductible  donations to GAI.

The  Ride  for  the  Rainforest will  begin  in Santiago,  Chile  and  end  in Guayaquil, Ecuador.  Roads  are  generally  excellent.   Provisions  can  be  made  for  riders  who  want  to  do only  Santiago-Lima (10 days) or  Lima-Guayaquil (10 days).

                                           About Your Guide

Dr. Barbara Brodman is Professor of Latin American & Caribbean Studies at Nova Southeastern
University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.  Her knowledge of Latin America and of the Atacama
Desert are extensive.  In 1997, she retraced Che Guevara’s legendary motorcycle journey
through South America, becoming the first person, and only woman, to do so.  Her journey was
widely covered by the media, while thousands followed her adventures online or read her book
about the adventure, Looking For Mr. Guevara.  Of particular interest to many was her mere two
months experience riding a motorcycle before she embarked upon the journey. In summer 2005,
Ride for the Rainforest will take her, and her motorcycle, back to South America; this time to raise
funds to save the rainforest by riding 3,000 miles through the driest landmass on earth, the
Atacama Desert of Chile and Peru.  However, this time, she will not be alone. She will guide a
select group of ten motorcycles and be accompanied by her husband, Chachi Pacheco, an
experienced rider and former owner/operator of Wild Peru Adventures.  Dr. Brodman is founder
and President of the Global Awareness Institute, an environmental public charity, and she sits on
the Board of the Inter-American Center for Human Rights.  Scholar, humanitarian, and adventurer,
Dr. Brodman’s knowledge of global and Latin American affairs, and her hands-on approach to
acquiring it, enthrall and inspire the many students and non-students to whom she lectures
regularly.  As your guide, she will both lead you and inform you.
