Spoilers: Juliet Is Bleeding
Teaser: after the funeral of Irene Zuko
Author's note: The following is the answer to another challenge of the ficwrite list. It's a drabble depicting a funeral scene. But you can read it also as a snapshot. Either way, I will use it as a scene in a full-length story that I'm still writing in the moment.

Cold at Heart
by Birgitt Schuknecht
He was alone. All others had left. He had lashed out at them effectively, with his tongue and fists.
"Irene, can you hear me? Are you there?" He got no answer. She's gone. Forever. He fell to his knees, tears wetting his cheeks.
He didn't acknowledge Fraser's presence before the Mountie touched his cheek. Ray looked up, seeing the misery in the other man's eyes. It didn't reach his heart.
"Ray, I'm..." Fraser broke off.
There had been times Ray would have responded to the well-hidden plea in that voice. Not anymore. "There's no way you can replace her, Mountie."
