Six Million Dollar Man Cast

Series Description:

Thie Six Million Dollar Man was a sci-fi tv show about an astronaut (Colonel Steve Austin) who was critically injured while testing a lunar lander for NASA. Luckily for him, the U.S. Government also had a program developing machine replacement body parts! They replaced both of his legs and his right arm with "super-powered" mechanical ones. He also got a new left eye with x-ray vision! As a cyborg (part-human, part-machine), Colonel Austin used his powers to fight the enemies of the United States and free people everywhere!

Six Million Dollar Man Cast:

Lee Majors .............. Colonel Steve Austin
Richard Anderson ........ Oscar Goldman
Alan Oppenheimer ........ Dr. Rudy Wells (1973-1974)
Martin E. Brooks ........ Dr. Rudy Wells (1974-1978)
Lindsay Wagner .......... Jaime Sommers
Jennifer Darling ........ Peggy Callahan

Tv Show Trivia:

The Six Million Dollar Man was based on the 1971 novel, "Cyborg", written by Martin Caidin, an ex-airforce pilot and public relations man for NASA.

At the beginning of the series, Steve Austin actually killed some bad guys. After complaints that he was a role model for kids, the producers cut way back on the level of violence on the show.

The government agency that Colonel Steve Austin worked for was called the "Office of Scientific Information".

Towards the end of the series, Lee Majors grew a moustache. The audience hated it and he shaved it back off.

Prior to shooting the final season's episodes, Lee Majors went on strike over a contract dispute. The producers almost replaced him with another actor!

Two of the songs heard on the two-part, "Bionic Woman" episode were sung by Lee Majors. They were titled, "Gotta Get Loose" and "Sweet Jamie".

There were several other bionic characters over the run of the series. Most everyone is familiar with the "Bionic Woman". Jaime Sommers was introduced to the series to give it a romantic interest. Jaime was a former pro tennis player who was seriously injured in a sky-diving accident. After receiving her "bionics", her body rejected them and the audience was led to believe she had died. It turned out she was only in a coma and recovered. She appeared in a few more episodes and then got her own series, "The Bionic Woman!"

There was also a "Seven Million Dollar Man" built by Dr. Wells as a backup for Steve Austin. Unfortunately, he went "nuts" and Steve Austin had to stop him from his evil ways.

There was also a "Bionic Boy" who received mechanical legs to replace his which where paralyzed.

When the spin-off of this series, "The Bionic Woman" moved to a different network, the characters of "Oscar Goldman (Richard Anderson)" and "Dr. Rudy Wells (Martin E. Brooks)" became the first ever characters to appear on two different networks at the same time.

Lee Majors was born "Harvey Lee Yeary" in Middlesboro, Kentucky. He was married four times, his second marriage being to "Farrah Fawcett" of "Charlie's Angels" fame. Lee was actually starring in two shows at the same time! In addition to doing the Six Million Dollar Man pilot and tv movies and he was also starring as "Jess Brandon" on the series, "Owen Marshall"! On top of that, in 1976 he and his wife "Farrah Fawcett" were both starring in their own series. Lee was already a big name star by the time this series began due to his role as "Heath Barkley" on the series, "The Big Valley (1965)". It was a rough part though. He played the illegitimate son of a deceased father and he got beat up a lot. He even got whipped three times on that series. Then to be nearly killed and have several parts of his body replaced on this series! Well, the $50.000 per episode he earned on this series may have eased the pain a little!

The aircraft crashing that you see in the opening credits was an M2-F2 "flying body" that crashed on May 10, 1967 at Edwards Air Force base. It hit the ground travelling at 250 miles per hour and tumbled six times before coming to rest. The pilot, Bruce Peterson, lost his right eye and that forced him to end his career. He stated that he liked the show but hated reliving his accident each week!

Richard Anderson had roles in the final episodes of two extremely popular tv series. On the last episode of, "The Fugitive (1963)" he played Dr. Richard Kimble's brother-in-law and was even a suspect in the murder of Kimble's wife. On the final episode of "Perry Mason (1957)", he plays a police Lieutenant who questions witnesses to a murder. The witnesses are Perry Mason himself and many of the other regular cast members! Actually, Richard Anderson played the role as, "Lieutenant Drum" on that show as a regular during the entire final season. On "The Six Million Dollar Man (1974)", Anderson worked for a fictional government agency named the "OSI". In real life he once did an orientation video for the real-life agency also known as the "OSI"!

Lindsay Wagner started as a model but she hated it so she tried acting. After several guest-starring roles on tv shows, she really stood out in her performance in the movie, "The Paper Chase (1973)". She then got her own series, "The Bionic Woman (1976)" after her guest-starring in the role of "Jamie Sommers" on the "Six Million Dollar Man (1974)" became such a huge audience draw. She won an Emmy for her performance on "The Bionic Woman (1976)". She has also starred in nearly 40 movies! Her Aunt is "Linda Gray" of "Dallas (1978)" fame. When Geneviève Bujold quit the Captain's role after filming for only a few days on "Star Trek Voyager (1995)", Lindsay was in top contention for that role, which finally went to "Kate Mulgrew".
