Randy's Webpage

Welcome to Randy's home page. This is the place where many people put a little biography, so here goes. I'm 53 years old and live in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan about 15 miles north of the town of L'Anse (pronounced Lawns). You can see a picture of my house and read other information about the area as you scroll down this page. I am retired from Bell Laboratories (now Lucent Technologies), in Murray Hill, NJ. I worked there as a laboratory technician in the solid state physics area. I have one son who is working/living in the greater Phillidelphia area doing commercial computer upgrades. I'm interested in a wide variety of subjects including, but not limited to, antique motorcycles, nature and the outdoors, photography, music of all types, literature, philosophy, and not least of all, homebrewing.

This page is constantly being modified so check back now and then to see what changes I've made as I learn more about HTML and webpage design.
But first - a few pictures.

Randy's Pride and Joy - 1947 Harley-Davidson FL, 74 cu. in. "Knucklehead"

I acquired this morotcycle in 1985. I traded a '51 Panhead (and a little cash) for the bike. The motor was rebuilt by one of the premier antique engine rebuilders on the east coast, John Fitzpatrick. Although the color looks white in the photos, it is really a very light yellow. That wasn't a factory color in 1947, but I've gotten so many comments on the bike, I thought I'd leave it as is for a while. When a repaint is finally due, I think I'll take it back to the original Harley red. Take note of the fully inclosed chain guard, a unique aftermarket accessory of the times.

Randy and his 1986 FXST Atop the Beartooth Pass in Montana

The Beartooth Highway and Pass are located in south-central Montana. I lived in the area for a year before returning to northern Michigan. The highway runs from Red Lodge, which is about an hour south of Billings, to Cooke City which is at the north entrance to Yellowstone Park. It is a beautiful piece of real estate but is little known outside the local area. If you look closely, you can see that this picture was taken in July and there are still patches of snow at the higher elevations.

Randy's little place in the woods in the Upper Penninsula of Michigan.

This is what I call home. I think the western Upper Penninsula of Michigan has some of the most beautiful northwoods scenery anywhere because much of it is framed by Lake Superior. The house is located north of a small town called L'Anse and is only a mile from the Lake Superior shore. It sits on 40 acres of woods comprised of maple, hemlock and fir trees. To me it is simply paradise. Summer is pleasent up here with highs in the 80's, but winter is another story. It doesn't get extreamly cold because of the moderating effect of the lake, but snowfall can reach in excess of 300 inches a season (see picture below). That's OK though - it keeps the rowdy element away.

Winter Wonderland.

Lloyd Jorgensen and his Indian

This picture is of my girlfriend's father and was taken in the early '40s. I don't know much about this bike, the picture or the man, but it's an interesting photo anyway. If someone could help me pin down the year, I'd be interested in hearing from them. All I can say for sure is it's a 4-cylinder Indian from the late '30's.
