Ecclesiastes 12

Ecclesiastes 12: (v. 1-7) A description of the infirmities of age.

(v. 8-14) All is vanity: also a warning of the judgment to come.

A description of the infirmities of age

(Eccl 12:1 KJV) Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them;

The time to start teaching a child is from the time they are born till they die. Learning is a never ending process of making mistakes and learning how to conquer those mistakes. When a child is young they are open and hearts free from lusts and hate and evil then is the time to train (teach) them the word of God. By words, but mostly by actions. It has long been proved that what we see we remember far longer then those things we hear. If a child is raised in a home filled with bitterness and hate, then expect them to share those same feelings. If a child parents lie, then act as if they don't, then the child will grow up accepting this as ok actions. Remember this too, in the church the child see's how much love others show as well as how much back biting and fussing, a child is ever learning and he learns from his peers. I think that one of the reason for the church's overall decline in being like Christ, is the direct result of many like myself, saw little of Christ in the members of the church as we grew up. We must strive to change that while there is time, and that change can and must start with you.

Prov 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.

Exo 20:12 Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.

Isa 40:28 Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding.

Rom 1:29 Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,

Rom 1:30 Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,

Rom 1:31 Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:

Rom 1:32 Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.

Eccl 12:1: Verses 1-7. We should remember our sins against our Creator, repent, and seek forgiveness. We should remember our duties, and set about them, looking to him for grace and strength. This should be done early, while the body is strong, and the spirits active. When a man has the pain of reviewing a misspent life, his not having given up sin and worldly vanities till he is forced to say, I have no pleasure in them, renders his sincerity very questionable. Then follows a figurative description of old age and its infirmities, which has some difficulties; but the meaning is plain, to show how uncomfortable, generally, the days of old age are. As the four verses, vs. 2-5, are a figurative description of the infirmities that usually accompany old age, vs. 6 notices the circumstances which take place in the hour of death. If sin had not entered into the world, these infirmities would not have been known. Surely then the aged should reflect on the evil of sin.

(Eccl 12:2 KJV) While the sun, or the light, or the moon, or the stars, be not darkened, nor the clouds return after the rain:

(Eccl 12:3 KJV) In the day when the keepers of the house shall tremble, and the strong men shall bow themselves, and the grinders cease because they are few, and those that look out of the windows be darkened,

(Eccl 12:4 KJV) And the doors shall be shut in the streets, when the sound of the grinding is low, and he shall rise up at the voice of the bird, and all the daughters of music shall be brought low;

Could this be a reflection of today? Is there so much crime you are afraid to leave your car running in your drive, or walk down a city street at night. Are we seeing more and more people lose there jobs? Are farms failing all around us and is the meat we eat often contaminated? Has so much sin entered our world that you no longer know or want to know those who lives beside you? How many church pastors have been caught stealing, child abuse, sex crimes? Is it at a place when you rarely have a church family to your house for dinner? How many have of you have and use drugs, or drink, have movies or watch them on cable that you know is not pleasing to God? How many cheat on tax's, lie to there bosses, steal from the company's they work for. Lie about sick time, abuse leave, and the list can go on. Remember as our times grow darker, its because the church has become less like Christ, its your choice and you choose to sin. And that choice is what your kids see.

(Eccl 12:5 KJV) Also when they shall be afraid of that which is high, and fears shall be in the way, and the almond tree shall flourish, and the grasshopper shall be a burden, and desire shall fail: because man goeth to his long home, and the mourners go about the streets:

(Eccl 12:6 KJV) Or ever the silver cord be loosed, or the golden bowl be broken, or the pitcher be broken at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the cistern.

Oh yes we buy the kids the new car, give them spending money. And what do they do? They buy drugs, alcohol, they learn to expect the giving with out work. Train a child, teach the child, that reward comes from doing good, and working.

2 Th 3:10 For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat.

(Eccl 12:7 KJV) Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.

Our bodies return to dust, the spirit, returns to God. The question is this the soul, or is this his spirit in us. We find many places that would seem to say the soul sleeps. I think its this, we have the breath of life, that is Gods spirit it returns, our bodies return to dust and the soul of man sleeps till his coming.

Deu 31:16 And the LORD said unto Moses, Behold, thou shalt sleep with thy fathers; and this people will rise up, and go a whoring after the gods of the strangers of the land, whither they go to be among them, and will forsake me, and break my covenant which I have made with them.

2 Sam 7:12 And when thy days be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom.

Job 7:21 And why dost thou not pardon my transgression, and take away mine iniquity? for now shall I sleep in the dust; and thou shalt seek me in the morning, but I shall not be.

Psa 13:3 Consider and hear me, O LORD my God: lighten mine eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death;

Dan 12:2 And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.

Rev 20:4 And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.

1 Sam 28:11 Then said the woman, Whom shall I bring up unto thee? And he said, Bring me up Samuel.

1 Sam 28:12 And when the woman saw Samuel, she cried with a loud voice: and the woman spake to Saul, saying, Why hast thou deceived me? for thou art Saul.

1 Sam 28:13 And the king said unto her, Be not afraid: for what sawest thou? And the woman said unto Saul, I saw gods ascending out of the earth.

This is interesting, first we see Samuel brought back up or awakened from his place of peace, but note she saw gods ascending out of the earth. When one dies are they then on there way to heaven, or do angels feed and nurture the departed?

1 Sam 28:14 And he said unto her, What form is he of? And she said, An old man cometh up; and he is covered with a mantle. And Saul perceived that it was Samuel, and he stooped with his face to the ground, and bowed himself.

1 Sam 28:15 And Samuel said to Saul, Why hast thou disquieted me, to bring me up? And Saul answered, I am sore distressed; for the Philistines make war against me, and God is departed from me, and answereth me no more, neither by prophets, nor by dreams: therefore I have called thee, that thou mayest make known unto me what I shall do.

Luke 23:43 And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.

2 Cor 12:3 And I knew such a man, (whether in the body, or out of the body, I cannot tell: God knoweth;)

2 Cor 12:4 How that he was caught up into paradise, and heard unspeakable words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter.

2 Cor 12:5 Of such an one will I glory: yet of myself I will not glory, but in mine infirmities.

Rev 2:7 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God.

Mat 17:2 And was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light.

Mat 17:3 And, behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with him.

Mat 17:4 Then answered Peter, and said unto Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here: if thou wilt, let us make here three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias.

Here is a question, if paradise is heaven, Paul saw it, Jesus promised the thief he would go there with him, did a change take place and if so when. Or was Saul just not there yet? Moses and Elias was present when Jesus was transfigured. Those with him knew who Moses and Elias was. So it would appear that when one dies that the body goes to dust and that the spirit does go to God. The question then is when he comes again how can the dead raise first. "even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him." " and the dead in Christ shall rise first:" So then does this mean after the death of Jesus that those that die sleep till he comes? There are many different ideals on this, I think in fact that when we die we go to heaven or hell, when he comes he is coming from the old heaven not the new, he brings those that are dead and were Christians with him, those that are in hell is cast into the lake of fire those that are alive and remain or judged. But I'm open to other ideals because this is what makes the most sense to me does not make it right.

All is vanity: also a warning of the judgment to come

(Eccl 12:8 KJV) Vanity of vanities, saith the preacher; all is vanity.

Nothing is of value except serving God, having a heart right with him.

Eccl 12:8: Verses 8-14. Solomon repeats his text, VANITY OF VANITIES, ALL IS VANITY. These are the words of one that could speak by dear-bought experience of the vanity of the world, which can do nothing to ease men of the burden of sin. As he considered the worth of souls, he gave good heed to what he spake and wrote; words of truth will always be acceptable words. The truths of God are as goads to such as are dull and draw back, and nails to such as are wandering and draw aside; means to establish the heart, that we may never sit loose to our duty, nor be taken from it. The Shepherd of Israel is the Giver of inspired wisdom. Teachers and guides all receive their communications from him. The title is applied in Scripture to the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God. The prophets sought diligently, what, or what manner of time, the Spirit of Christ in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow. To write many books was not suited to the shortness of human life, and would be weariness to the writer, and to the reader; and then was much more so to both than it is now. All things would be vanity and vexation, except they led to this conclusion, That to fear God, and keep his commandments, is the whole of man. The fear of God includes in it all the affections of the soul towards him, which are produced by the Holy Spirit. There may be terror where there is no love, nay, where there is hatred. But this is different from the gracious fear of God, as the feelings of an affectionate child. The fear of God, is often put for the whole of true religion in the heart, and includes its practical results in the life. Let us attend to the one thing needful, and now come to him as a merciful Saviour, who will soon come as an almighty Judge, when he will bring to light the things of darkness, and manifest the counsels of all hearts. Why does God record in his word, that ALL IS VANITY, but to keep us from deceiving ourselves to our ruin? He makes our duty to be our interest. May it be graven in all our hearts. Fear God, and keep his commandments, for this is all that concerns man.

(Eccl 12:9 KJV) And moreover, because the preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge; yea, he gave good heed, and sought out, and set in order many proverbs.

Preaches should preach not their own ideals or doctrines but the word of God. I find today that many are lost and missing the mark because we spend to much time trying to stuff our own ideals down the peoples throat instead of teaching them the word of God and letting the Holy Spirit do the condemning. It is not our job to condemn nor is it out job to sit in judgement, its our job to preach and teach the ways of God and Christ.

Rom 10:8 But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach;

Rom 10:9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

Rom 10:10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

2 Tim 4:2 Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.

2 Tim 4:3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;

2 Tim 4:4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.

(Eccl 12:10 KJV) The preacher sought to find out acceptable words: and that which was written was upright, even words of truth.

We should teach and preach with love, understanding and fear.

1 Cor 9:22 To the weak became I as weak, that I might gain the weak: I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some.

Jude 1:21 Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.

Jude 1:22 And of some have compassion, making a difference:

Jude 1:23 And others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire; hating even the garment spotted by the flesh.

(Eccl 12:11 KJV) The words of the wise are as goads, and as nails fastened by the masters of assemblies, which are given from one shepherd.

1 Tim 6:20 O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called:

1 Tim 6:21 Which some professing have erred concerning the faith. Grace be with thee. Amen.

(Eccl 12:12 KJV) And further, by these, my son, be admonished: of making many books there is no end; and much study is a weariness of the flesh.

2 Tim 2:15 Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

Study what? His word, we spend to much time in other books, thinking that a man of God must have this degree or that, that is contrary to the word, give me a preacher full of his spirit and well studied on the Bible not mans ideals.

(Eccl 12:13 KJV) Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.

James 1:27 Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.

(Eccl 12:14 KJV) For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.

1 Pet 1:17 And if ye call on the Father, who without respect of persons judgeth according to every man's work, pass the time of your sojourning here in fear:

Rom 3:27 Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? of works? Nay: but by the law of faith.

Rom 3:28 Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.

Rom 9:32 Wherefore? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were by the works of the law. For they stumbled at that stumblingstone;

James 2:21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar?

James 2:22 Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect?

James 2:23 And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God.

James 2:24 Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.

James 2:25 Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she had received the messengers, and had sent them out another way?

James 2:26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

Rev 2:13 I know thy works and where thou dwellest, even where Satan's seat is: and thou holdest fast my name, and hast not denied my faith, even in those days wherein Antipas was my faithful martyr, who was slain among you, where Satan dwelleth.

Rev 2:19 I know thy works, and charity, and service, and faith, and thy patience, and thy works; and the last to be more than the first.
