Supplies:
- 2 copies of Quidditch Through The Ages  (for sale at any book store), for use  by Seekers
- 6 Goal hoops (Made of hoola-hoops and broom handles- use duct tape to tape a cross brace (bamboo plant stake works well) to the hoola-hoop, then tape the brace and hoop to the broom handle's rounded end)
- 2 Bludgers (flexible Frisbees or foam boomerang)
- 1 Quaffle (red rubber ball)
- 1 envelope full of book quotes (print book quotes,
Click here for the quotes I use)
- 1 key listing all the quotes and their locations (
- 1 Snitch (bouncy ball or ping pong ball)
- 1 hammer (for pounding hoops into the ground)
- Paper plates (marking lines), duct tape (fixing hoops)
- arm bands or quidditch robes
o 7 each of: red, green, yellow, and blue
o Arm bands can just be strips of cheap fabric.

Instructions:
- One person needs to be the referee.  (a whistle would be mighty handy).  The job of the referee is to (somewhat randomly) call out fouls and award penalty shots.  The referee can also explain the rules… a high level of enthusiasm is recommended)
- It is fun to also have a Witch/Wizard of misfortune who randomly casts spells on players, i.e. to hop instead of run... works well in equalizing play, if one player is too rough.
- Set Up:  Pound three hoops into the ground on either side of the field, about 2 paces apart from each other.  Have some way of marking the middle of the field and 10 feet in front of the hoops.  Set Bludgers, Quaffle, and snitch in the middle of the field.  To begin play, the referee throws the Quaffle and Bludgers into the air.  (See Diagram)
- Split up the group into teams. (count off recommended) 7 is the ideal number on a team.
o 1 Keeper (guards the goals)
o 2 Beaters (throw the Bludgers to stop the other team)
o 3 Chasers (throw the Quaffle to each other and score goals)
o 1 Seeker (looks for a book quote then grabs the snitch)

Rules:
Goal scoring & Chasers:
- Goal Scoring is done by the Chasers.  The Keepers try to prevent this. (Keepers are allowed to score goals as well, but this is very rare)
- 10 points are awarded for every goal.
- Only one Chaser at a time is allowed in the scoring area (10 feet in front of the hoops).  (this is to prevent the other two from holding down the Keeper while the third scores)
- Only Chasers and Keepers are allowed to touch the Quaffle.  Chasers carry it (no dribbling required). They can kick it, throw it, bounce it, punch it… or anything else.
- Chasers must pass the Quaffle to another Chaser at least once before they cross the mid-field line.
- Chasers or Keepers from the opposing team may grab the Quaffle.  The referee has the responsibility of calling foul whenever they deem the level of force used to extract the Quaffle has become “excessive”.  “Cobbing” (excessive use of elbows), is expressly forbidden.
Goal Saving & Keepers:
- Keepers may leave the scoring area and participate as a chaser if they wish, though it is unadvisable to leave their hoops unguarded
- Chasers may NOT enter the scoring area of their own goal to assist their keeper—even if the Keeper has left the scoring area!
Bludgers & Beaters:
- If anyone is hit by a Bludger they MUST FREEZE for 5 seconds.  If they are holding the Quaffle they must DROP it.
- If the Seeker is hit by the Bludger between the time when they find the quote in the book and when they pick up the snitch, they must start again with a new quote.  UNLESS- the Bludger hits them in the arm or leg, in which case that appendage is considered broken, and they can hop to the snitch or not use one arm.
- Beaters MUST throw the Bludgers.  They CANNOT walk up to someone and hit them with the Bludger while holding it.  They MUST be at least 3 feet away from the person when they throw the Bludger.
Catching the Snitch & Seekers:
- When the snitch is caught, the game is over, and the Seeker who caught it gets 150 points.
- Seekers draw a quote from the envelope at the beginning of the game.  They then must find the quote in the book.
- Once they have found the quote, they must pick up the snitch
- The snitch starts out on the center line, but during play it may be kicked around a little.  The seeker must get to the snitch without getting hit by a Bludger (unless it only hits their leg or arm, see above).
- Other team members may assist in protecting the Seeker, or stopping the opposing Beaters, but only the Seeker can touch the snitch.

FOULS-
When any of the rules are broken, the Referee calls out FOUL, (or blows a whistle).  Play stops and the team who was fouled gets a Penalty Shot.

Penalty Shot-

One chaser takes the Quaffle.  The Keeper is allowed to defend the hoops, but no other players participate.
