The Contribution of Environment and Corrective Lenses Towards the Developmant of Myopia
Home
On sci.med.vision discussion forum, we asked about the cause of myopia.
One of the replies we got from a conventional optometrist was:
The Cause of Myopia
The Contribution of Environment vs Lens to Myopia "Genetics would be the only "reason" firmly supported by the myopia literature.  The contribution of environment (working up close, prolonged close work) is small, and the contribution of corrective lenses is nil."
Another reply we got from another conventional optometrist was:
Comparison between Conventional Optometry and Real Eyecare
"I believe that it is genetically based with environmental modulation."
We then asked the conventional optometrists on the forum to explain how the environment (working up close, prolonged close work) causes myopia.  The first reply we got was:
more to come......
"It doesn't  contribute much."
The second reply we got was:
"......It has NO EFFECT on the development of myopia.

......anyone who claims they "know" what the true cause is and is treating patients based upon their supposed knowledge should be stripped of their license to practise and is a potential hazard to the public health."
The subsequence replies we got were:
"Why do you think we know."
"You were asking "how" the environment causes myopia.  Nobody knows"
"You want simplistic answers nobody understands completely."
"I never said that the environment causes myopia.  I don't believe that the environment causes myopia."
"Nobody knows for sure."
It seems like these conventional optometrists are trying to hide something.  They first admitted that environment is a small cause of myopia but later said "it doesn't contribute much" and later they said "it has NO EFFECT on the development of myopia."
Now, let's go back to the first answer we got from these conventional optometrists.
"Genetics would be the only "reason" firmly supported by the myopia literature.  The contribution of environment (working up close, prolonged close work) is small, and the contribution of corrective lenses is nil."
The question now is:
How can the contribution of environment be small but the contribution of corrective lenses be nil?
As far as the eye is concerned, the contribution of the environment and the contribution of the corrective lenses are the same, as shown in Figure 1 and Figure 2.
Dear all conventional optometrists:

Could you please answer my question above?  Thanks a lot.

Sincerely,

Real Eyecare
