AIR

Air is invisible to the sight, but it is a very vital in the sustaining of life on the earth. Air has weight, also occupies space, and there is never a time that it is not around us. Because we cannot see smell or taste it, we so often forget its importance and the fact that it is always there. If we are privileged enough to be where the air is fresh and unpolluted, we cannot help but feel comfortable and at peace.

Air is a mixture of different colourless but useful gasses, namely Nitrogen, Oxygen, Carbon Dioxide, and Water Vapour. Nitrogen occupies approximately 78% of the air around us, Oxygen takes up about 21% and Carbon Dioxide takes up about 0.03%. There are some other gasses in the air around us that are only present in very small quantities namely: Arogon, Hydrogen Helium, Neon, Xenon and Krypton.

Clean Air is vital to the sustaining of our lives because our respiring cells need Oxygen (O2) to keep us alive. In breathing we inhale Oxygen and exhale Carbon Dioxide CO2) which the plants around us need in order to stay alive, (Photosynthesizing).

Air pollution burdens our health, ecosystems and quality of life.

Dirty air threatens our health and ultimately life on earth. Dirty air contributes to problems like asthma, heart and lung disease, and to a certain extent cancer. While everyone exposed to high levels of air pollution suffers some harm, people with asthma are particularly vulnerable to more and more severe attacks.

Every city faces its own mix of air pollution challenges, from toxic diesel pollution to hazardous power plant emissions to major highways built too close to neighborhood parks and schools. Worldwide air pollution is responsible for large numbers of deaths and cases of respiratory disease.
