Introduction

Have you ever wanted to take a step back in time and ask questions of the people who lived then?  Fight alongside a solider in a battle long ago?  Here is your chance to find out more about the role Texans played during the Civil War.  You can even choose the regiment or company whose battles you would like to follow.  You will also have the opportunity to give another's point of view as told by a mother, son, or business owner during your character presentation to the class.

Students are welcome to use PowerPoint, Digital Photography or Video to include the use of technology in their project.

The Process

To accomplish the task, you need to go through the following steps.

  1. Research with selected websites, text book and other various resources what part Texas played in the Civil War.  http://www.kwanah.com/txmilmus/tnghist10.htm                                

  2. Reflect upon what you discovered and provide an explanation/summary of findings.  (1/2 page-1 page in length)

  3. Create a map of the United States, labeling each battle.  Include the date and which division was involved.

  4. Research the lives of people who lived during the Civil War era. http://www.angelfire.com/tx/RandysTexas/

  5. Become a character of your choice such as mother, son, solider or business owner to help identify with how the lives of Texans' were affected by the Civil War and Reconstruction.

  6. Begin comparing and contrasting the economic industries of Texas before and after the war to see if the war hurt or helped.

  7. Create a timeline including pictures, graphics and information from a variety of sources.  http://members.aol.com/SMckay1234/

All written information will be put into a folder with brads to provided by the instructor.  The folders will be collected at the time of character presentation.  Don't wait until the last minute or let yourself get behind.  Neatness, organization and consistency are the keys in doing well on this assignment.

Conclusion

After doing your character presentation, you can see the Civil War effected numerous lives.  Which side would you have chosen and why?  How could this war have been avoided?  Do you think Texas came away stronger?  What about our nation as a whole? 

Think about these questions and participate in a class discussion.
