The Lord of the Rings Ext Cut DVD Review

When I saw the fellowship for the first time back in December 2001 I was suprised by how good it was, I had never read the books before so I just went to the cinema as I would, not expecting much. But I was blown away by everything about the movie; the visuals, the characters, everthing and now that I own the extended cut it just enhances that experience even more. Though the Extended Version doen't really add much to the development of the story, it does offer extended versions of scenes and completely new ones, such as when the fellowship are given weapons by Galadriel, who is then asked by Gimli [John Rhys-Davies] for one of her hairs as a keepsake.

--> The Extras

Over six hours of Interviews, featurettes, documentaries, on-set footage, and audio commentaries. The 4 disc-set is most definetely a DVD to die for. Almost everything is covered from pre-production, production and the final release over two-discs entitled 'The Appendicies' Part 1 and Part 2. There are so many highlights in the extras as nothing is boring unlike some other DVD's that have  featurette fluff where they cut to a trailer, then to an interview and then its finished. All of these extras are interesting and layed out accordingly in an easy to navigate menu. One highlight is 'The Fellowship' where we see how the actors got on when they first met each other and how they bonded with their midget doubles. I can't comment on the commentaries as I haven't had a chance to listen to them yet but im sure they are good as they feature over 30 members of cast and crew.

This is a must buy. If you haven't got it yet, buy it, even if you've never seen the LOTR, rent it or something its too good. If you bought the normal 2-disc version back in June or so it's still worth buying this one as it offers so much more insight into the development of the movie and offers 30 minutes of well-worth-watching footage!! Lets hope they release Two Towers soon aswell.
