A semi-intelligent ancestor of the modern kryst (Echinolithus sapiens), the primitive kryst is a common sight in the Quasi-Elemental Plane of Mineral. It is a stellate creature, similar in shape to its intelligent relative, but sporting more spikes over a far smaller body.

In his book De Vita Metallorum, Bartolomeo di Malapietra shows evidence that this echinolithus has but two senses, hearing and the ability to detect density variation in matter.

Combat: The primitive kryst is a peaceful mineralovore, burrowing through the planar soil to find its nourishment. If attacked, it will try to escape by burrowing through the hardest matter it can find. If it is cornered, or if youngsters are attacked, it will fight by ramming against the opponent. Due to the numerous spikes, each attack causes 1d4 points of damage.

Habitat/Society: The lesser krysts form large familiar groups sharing a lair, which is composed essentially by a featureless stretch of quasi-elemental matter. The krysts do, however, seem to recognize paths within their territories which they will use instead of burrowing straight to their destination. The meaning of these paths is currently unknown to the sages from the Prime Material Plane.

Ecology: This echinolithus is the equivalent of small herbivores of the Prime Material, like hares, moles or similar mammals. Its diet is mainly composed of silicates. It has no purpose in the Prime, except as material component for certain spells (It can replace the material components for the spells gemstone skin and bladearms.), but it is sometimes kept as pet by the sentient krysts, and it is hunted by medium size predators of its habitat.
