The Top Six Greatest Websites EVER!!!

#1 Introductory University Chemistry I: Acids and Bases: Acid-Base Titrations

This website is really great for getting an overview of what acid-base chemistry and titration is about. It talks about the titration curves, how a titration is done, and even goes into the stoichiometry of the acids and bases in titration.  It also goes into some depth about the three ways to define acids and bases. This is definitely a great website to study from.  The problems with this website is that it is a little tough to access all the information. It is very easy to overlook something. Also, there are no graphics to supplement the information.

#2 1 Evaluation of blood-gases and acid-base abnormalities.

What can I say? I am a sucker for the medical applications. This website is wonderful for informing you about alkalosis and acidosis. It talks about the types there are and what the correct pH range is for your body. It presents this information in tabular form so it is easy to read and interpret. If you are interested in anything medical, then this is your website. I really don’t know what to say about the problems with this website because I really don’t see any. I guess if you are not into medicine at all or have no interest in acid/base chemistry, then this website would be a little bland.

#3 Pool Chemistry

I liked this website because it is about a topic that most people have either experienced in the past or experience veryday.  A lot of people have pools in their backyard. But very few have stopped to think about the chemistry going on inside its waters, unless, of course, they are a pool man or take care of their own pool. But for those of you that have never thought about it, like myself, it is very informative. It talks about the different types of chlorine that have to be added for different situations and how to keep the pH of the pool as constant as possible. How acid/base can you get? The main drawback to this web page is that it is not written for scientists, well maybe that is a good thing. But if you are looking for chemical reactions, equations, or molecules, then this is not a good website for that.

#4 KnoxNews.com: Community Health: Cardiology: Heartburn

This website is great because it is about something that most people have experienced: HEARTBURN. This is an acid/base situation that everyone can relate with. It has a lot of great information about what heartburn is, some of its causes, how it can be prevented, how it is diagnosed, and how it can be cured. This website is not good if you want to know some of the actual chemistry behind heartburn and the medication used in treating it. This is not a technical page, it is simply an informative one.

#5 Program for Acid-Base Symposium

This website is extremely scientific.  It talks about the discoveries and breakthroughs that are being made within the scientific community.  It is a great source if you want to know what is going on, but the problem is that it is written at an extremely scholarly level.  This makes for a rather dry website, but if science mumbo jumbo is what you are looking for, this website definitely has a lot of that.

#6 General Chemistry Online: FAQ: Chemistry of everyday life: How do mood lipsticks work?

I am so glad that I found this website. I thought that this was particularly cool because I myself have always wondered how that mood changing stuff like lipsticks and nail polishes worked. And come to find out—it’s acid/base chemistry!  I just had to add this one. There is some good information on how exactly they do work, with even some actual chemistry lingo thrown in, and it even gives a little home experiment you can perform, if you so choose. This is not a real in-depth website, it is just a question answer thing, but I thought it was interesting.
