The red-bellied woodpecker (Melanerpes carolinus) is a common, conspicuous bird about 9 inches long. Primarily a bird of the Southern U.S., it ranges north to Southern Ontario. It does have a red belly patch that varies in size and intensity and is often difficult to see.
