 Mission

The Politics of Food Program seeks to create a locally sustainable food system that  ensures community food security. A sustainable food system produces locally grown, safe, nutritious food that is ecologically sound, humane to livestock, and economically viable for farmers, farm workers and consumers. Communities are food secure when all persons obtain a culturally acceptable, nutritionally adequate diet from local food sources. POF strives to achieve this vision through intervention in the local food system and through education and advocacy.

Programs

School-Community Garden Program

Politics of Food is part of a national movement of community school gardens integrating cultural and environmental history into the curriculum through gardening experience.

Following a school garden club model we've established at Martin Luther King School #9, POF is expanding to several other schools. We work with a diversity of community partners including Cornell Cooperative Extension, the Rochester City School District, Metro Justice TV Dinner, neighborhood groups and of course, parents, elders and teachers.

Rochester Roots is an intergenerational network of teachers, students, parents, elders, and master gardeners sharing ideas and resources.

Genesee Valley Organic Community Supported Agriculture

The Politics of Food Program is the urban sponsor of the 13 year old Genesee Valley Organic Community Supported Agriculture project (GVOCSA) with Peacework Organic Farm. Consumers contract for a season with farmers for quality food in exchange for money and work time. GVOCSA is now accepting members for the 2002 season which begins May 23, 2002.

Guatemala Agricultural Project

We have come full circle from an exchange in the 1970's of Guatemalan goods supporting the re-teaching of sustainable agriculture practices in two villages by our friend, Kai Yutah Clouds. Kai was murdered by the death squad in 1980 for his empowering of the people.

Politics of Food now helps to support Mayan agronomists in Guatemala who teach soil and water conservation and organic agriculture.

Politics of Food Resource Center

Print and audio-visual materials are available to the community on loan, free of charge. The collection covers a broad range of sustainable food system topics emphasizing curricula integrating environmental studies, agriculture and nutrition with the NYS Learning Standards. Please call or e-mail the office to speak with our efficient and friendly librarian, Mary Boite.
