This is a website concerned with
family history and genealogy. These pages are intended to very
roughly inform fellow researchers interested in families of the name Pokrzywnicki and especially
the family "von Bock und Pokrzywnicki". |
z.T. über 100 Familien geführt, nur manchmal mit individuellen
Abänderungen. Insgesamt erwähnen die polnischen Adelsbücher (Herbarze) die folgenden Familien Pokrzywnicki (h. = herbu = des Wappens):

The szlachta, the polish nobility,
was very numerous compared to other countries – about 6 to 8 %
of the population were counted among it (around 1600 it is estimated
to comprise 600.000 persons). This necessitates that one and the same
name very often was used by severel, quite distinct families. It implies
as well that a very special heraldic system developed. Coat of arms
which are designated by a name are used by many, sometimes more than
a 100 families, and only seldomly with individual modifications. In total, the polish books on nobility (Herbarze) mention the following families Pokrzywnicki (h. = herbu = of the coat of arms):

Mir liegen detailliertere Materialien
31 Bde., Poznań [Posen]: Leitgeber [u.a.], 1879-1908. Hier Bd. 16 S. 283-303. Pokrzywnicki h. |
I have more detailed material
for the: Pokrzywnicki h. Bończa Obviously a widespread family, whose ancestral seat remains unclear. A branch of this family in later West Prussia (Kreis Konitz) can be traced to about 1700 and obtains its inclusion into the Prussian nobility after 1772. Pokrzywnicki h. Grzymała A family with the ancestral seat Pokrzywnica near Łęczyca in Greater Poland. Two Senators of the kingdom of Poland belonged to it. – A monography on that family, which is the main source of my notes, can be found in: Zychliński, Teodor : Zlota ksiega szlachty polskiej. 31 vols., Poznań [Posen]: Leitgeber [et al.], 1879-1908. In volume 16 pages 283-303. Pokrzywnicki h. Jastrzębiec This family's ancestral seat is Pokrzywnica Wielka near Mława in Masovia. A branch of this family came to East Prussia in about 1650 and was since then counted among the Prussian nobility. Here, it adopted a modified coat of arms (that has been – wrongly – identified as Lubicz or Ślepowron in the literature). This branch was given the additional name Bock in 1775. à More on this family here. |
