They will get you started in the right direction before you have waste valuable time. Usually the local genealogical society will have the necessary forms and many kinds words of advice to get you moving to find those ancestors who have been waiting for you to locate them. The forms are very low cost items at the LDS Family History Center or your local genealogical society.

Again, they will have lots of good words about the availability of genealogical software.
Interview All Living Relatives - start now, do not wait for another senior citizen to depart this plane of existence. That passing relative might have had the key to getting you back five generations and that is a plus. But you might just have missed the interview and he will not be back any time soon.
Keep good records - record all information you receive. Use tape recorders during your interviews with your relatives. Make copies of everything you gather and cite your sources!!! Always cite your sources. Information does no one any good if you do not know where it came from or how reliable the information is.
