The Way I See the TV World

Why do I watch so much television? I have nothing better to do iwith my time is one answe, but that is all too depressing of an answer. I like to think of myself as a sociologist of sorts and I am trying to understand the human condition. There must be some great secret to television that makes so many millions of people watch it, and I want to know what that secret is. Are we all just lonely? Do we like to see portraits of ourselves? Do we watch because we think we are supposed to? So far, I doubt the veracity of any of these theses, but they are commonly held by many. I don't think we are bored or unoriginal and are living vicariously through television. I don't believe television is wasteful and forces our brains to atrophy.

What do I believe? I believe that television is a testing ground. How will I act under certain circumstances? I don't know, but televsion helps me figure that out. It also alllows me to role play. Would I do the same thing that so and so did last night on so and so? Our moral selves are constantly questioned. This theory explains the popularity of so-called reality shows. Real people test their own moral grounds in the television world. What about sports? Everyone wants to be an armchair coach. We shout at the televsion and tell referees how they are wrong, how coaches are wrong, and what we would have done in the same situation.

But now let's return to me. I am an odd young man with a weird sense of humor. Don't believe me? E-mail me and find out how I respond. Tell me what you want to know about me. I'm waiting!!
