The Birth of "Pete"
Born in Muncie, Indiana on October 13, 1902, he had led a normal childhood. His parents, Lena and Gilbert, shuffled around alittle, trying to earn a decent living for their two sons, Harry and Fred.
By the early 1920's, Harry had already began his life in crime, having served time for atempted murder and carrying a concealed weapon. He was arrested in 1924 for a Kokomo, Indiana bank robbery and was suspected of several others.
Pierpont was sent to the Pendleton Reformatory and met John Dillinger here.
In July of 1925, Harry was transferred to the Michigan City prison for atempting to escape. By 1929, Dillinger had requested a transfer to the same prison to rejoin Pierpont.
Some agree and disagree on Harry's influence on John DIllinger, but it is most likely Dillinger would probably have not led the life he did if he had never met the more experienced and difinite Pierpont.
John greatly admired Harry and most of his crime education came from him.
John was asked to help his friend escape from prison. On his parole in May of 1933, Dillinger set out to achieve this, filled with dreams of one super gang.
John is believed to have thrown two packages of guns over the Michigan City wall for Pierpont. Included in the break were Charles Makley, a veteran bank robber, Russell Clark, also seasoned in the profession. John Hamilton, Ed Shouse, Walter Dietrich, Joe Fox, Joe Burns, Jim Clark and James Jenkins. All were either bank robbers, murderers or auto bandits.
