PetSearch was started because of the increasing amount of dogs and cats that go missing in Cyprus.  At least one dog a week is reported as missing.
What happens to these animals?

Have they been stolen?
Yes possibly, especially if they are pure bred or pedigree.  Dogs that are stolen are usually sold onto unsuspecting persons or pet shops, or are used for breeding.  Hunting dogs such as Spaniels, Pointers and even Dachshunds (sausage dogs) are frequently stolen for their, so called,  instinct to hunt.

Have they just wandered off and got lost?
Yes possibly, especially if your dog has not been spayed/neutered. A male dog can smell a female in season from a great distance, and will do anything to get to her. They will act on instinct walking for hours until they find her and even climb fences.

Could the Municipality or a local Animal Welfare Organisation have your pet?
Yes possibly, you must notify the police, your Municipality and your local animal welfare organisation as soon as you realise that your pet is missing.  For a list of all animal welfare organisations

Could someone have found him and decided to keep him?
Yes possibly,  your pet  may have been found and kept by somebody in the area where your he went missing.

What else could have happened?
Unfortunately, it is a sad fact in Cyprus that poison is put down in many areas by heartless people  to kill dogs and cats.  This is one possibility you have to keep in mind when your dog/cat goes missing.
