A study on traffic accidents compiled by the Dubai Department of Traffic Engineering and Road Safety, reveals that one in every 5,191 Dubai residents were killed last year in traffic accidents. One out of every 3,310 UAE nationals in Dubai lost their lives that same year.

Yesterday afternoon, two young nationals died when the vehicle they were driving slammed into a trailer on Sheikh Zayed Road. According to the police, the young men who were driving a black BMW were speeding when they hit a Nissan Sunny.

While trying to minimise the impact, they swerved to the right and ended up slamming into a trailer. Their car was squashed and the pair died on the spot.

Meanwhile, the Civil Defence yesterday said one person died and another was injured in a road collision in Dubai on Sunday. Both were UAE nationals. As a result of the collision, a fire erupted in the vehicle, burning the driver to death, while his companion received severe burns.

A total of 163 traffic accidents took place last year that claimed the lives of 185 persons, and in 1,296 accidents 2,286 people were injured. These traffic accidents in total were 101,149 as compared to 87,851 in 2000.

This means that traffic accidents in 2001 have increased by 15 per cent, and injuries through accidents by 3.2 per cent more that the year before.

Therefore the number of death causing traffic accidents has increased from 140 in 2000 to 163 in 2001, at a percentage of 16.4, and run over accidents from 323 to 338 accidents for the same two years, at an increased rate of 4.6 per cent.

The number of national deaths from 37 to 39, at 5.4 per cent, and the run over deaths have risen from 48 to 49, at a rate of 2 per cent.

The number of deaths per 100,000 persons have jumped from 18.3 to 19.3, at 6 per cent, and deaths per 100,000 nationals have increased from 29.3 to 30.2, at 30 per cent.

The number of highway traffic accidents have increased from 79 in 2000 to 81 in 2001, at a rate of 30 per cent. The number of deaths caused by the internal roads traffic accidents jumped from 86 to 104 for the same years, at a rate of 21 per cent.

The figures for the past 11 years show that 2001 has shown the highest number of traffic accidents and deaths. In comparison, in 1991, 103 persons died in traffic accidents, 28 of them were nationals, and the others expatriates.

In 1992, 135 deaths took place, 38 of them were nationals, and 97 expatriates.

In 1993 the number of deaths was 123, 24 of them were nationals. In 1994, 131 deaths took place, 37 of them were nationals; in 1995, 127 deaths, 23 of them were nationals; in 1996 there were 147 deaths, 32 of them were nationals; in 1997 there were 133 deaths, 28 of them were nationals; in 1998 there were 140 deaths, 30 of them were nationals; in 1999 there were 148 deaths, 32 were nationals; in 2000 there were 165 deaths, 37 of them were nationals, and in 2001 there were 185 deaths, 39 of them were nationals.
