About The Will of God.

The Bible tells us that everything that takes place takes place within the will of God.

  • 1). Creation - ‘worthy are you, our Lord and our God, to receive the glory and the honour and the power, for you ____________ all things and because of your _______ they were created’ (Revelation 4.11).
  • 2). Nature - ‘whatever the Lord ___________ that has He done, in Heaven and in earth, in the seas and in all deeps’ (Psalm 135.6).
  • 3). Government - ‘The ruler’s ______ is in the _______ of the Lord like the watercourses, He turns it wherever He _______’ (Proverbs 21.1). ‘All the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing, and He does according to His ______ in the army of Heaven, and among the _________ of the earth, and none can stay His hand or say, “What are you doing?” ’ (Daniel 4.35). ‘There is no authority but of God. The powers that be are ordained of God’ (Romans 13.1).
  • 4). The course of nations - ‘Behold, as the clay in the potter’s hand, so are you in My hand, Oh house of Israel. (Jeremiah 18.6).
  • 5). Man’s destiny - ‘For I will ____________ on whom I will have mercy, and I will have _____________ on whom I will have compassion, so then it is not of him who ________ nor of him who ______, but of God Who shows _________ ‘ (Romans 9.15-16). So that Christians are made God’s heritage ‘having been foreordained according to the ________ of Him Who works all things after the counsel of His own _____’ (Ephesians 1.11).
  • 6). Men’s lives - ‘There are many ________ in a man’s heart, but the _________ of the Lord will stand’ (Proverbs 20.22).
  • 7). Christian rebirth - ‘of His own will He ___________________ by the word of _______ so that we might be a kind of firstfruits of His creatures’ (James 1.18).
  • 8). Our separation to purity - ‘for this is the ______ of God, even your _______________’ (1 Thessalonians 4.3).
  • 9). The sufferings of believers - ‘for it is better, if the ______ of God should be, that you suffer for ____________ rather than evildoing’ (1 Peter 3.17).
  • 10). The sufferings of Christ - ‘Father, if it be possible remove ___________ from me, nevertheless, not my _____, but yours be done’ (Luke 22.42). For ‘He being delivered up by the determinate ________ and foreknowledge of God, you by the hands of lawless men did _______ and slay’ (Acts 2.23).
  • 11). The course of our lives - ‘for you ought to say, if the Lord ______ we shall do this or that’ (James 4.15). ‘Taking his leave of them and saying, “I will ________ again to you if God will’ (Acts 18.21).
  • 12). The summing up of all things - ‘Having made known to us the mystery of ____________, according to His good __________ which He purposed in Him, as a plan for the fulness of time, to sum up (unite, gather together) all things in Him’ (Ephesians 1.9-10).

We must, however, distinguish between the permissive will of God and the sovereign will of God. Some things God allows rather than determining to bring them about, for example 9 above, other things He determines to bring about, for example 10 and 12, although in the end everything is in His hands.

But while God is sovereign over all He does not cause the things that happen in our daily lives. Man is allowed a certain freedom to live his life, and the intermixture of man’s activities cause the situations that arise. What is true is that God is over all this, is aware of what will be, and can intervene, although He rarely does. When the sparrow fell to the ground God knew, but He did not interfere with the natural course of things. The lesson Jesus was teaching was that God was aware of all happenings and would help and guide us through them.
