Catfight!

An older interview, circa 1998.

Catfight! rock. The band is Jennifer, Ann, and Katy.
Their album is called “Kitty Glitter” and is one good
song after another. Jennifer answers the questions.

Was your original goal to start an all-female band?

My first band, Bite, was formed with the intention of
being all-female. None of us had been in bands before
and it seemed like a nurturing environment in which to
learn.  Ann and Katy were also in an all-girl band, the
Doll Squad, and when they lost their guitar player I
joined. We've all played in bands with boys before, but
prefer to play with girls.

Do people ever treat the band as a novelty?

When we first started playing people made an issue of
us being all-girls, but as time has passed people have
realized that we know what we're doing and our songs
stand on their own. It's probably been a couple of
years since we've encountered that sort of mentality,
but then we don't play shows for rednecks very often,
either.

What are your feelings on the Lilith Fair? Is it
better in concept than in practice?

Well I think the concept and the execution has been
very successful as long as people recognize that it
does not encompass all kinds of music that women are
making, but is limited to the folksy singer/songwriter
types.  A women's alternative tour would be fun to see
at some point.

Do you feel it's harder to get recognition because
your female?

Not at all, in fact it makes you stand out.  I think it
would be a lot harder to be recognized doing what
we're doing if we were men.

What does it feel like to make a great album like
yours? Are you working on another?

Our first album was pretty much just the first 13 songs
that we wrote together and encompassed a lot of
influences that we all had individually before we came
together as a band.  Since then I think our sound has
really gelled.  We've put out another 7”, but are
holding out on the second CD until we feel like we
can put out something really solid.

How would you describe your music to someone
who's never heard it?

One time we were playing a club in Columbia, SC and
I told the owner that we sounded like a cross between
punk rock and 60's girl group music (we had been
described that way before).  When we were finished
playing he told me that I didn't need to use such fancy
descriptions, we were “plain old rock-n-roll”. Which I
guess we are.

Who are the band's influences?

Some, but not all are:  The Ramones, The Rolling
Stones, The New York Dolls, Iggy Pop, X, The
Ronnettes, Joan Jett, and Kiss.

What is you ultimate goal as a band?

Having a good time doing what we do is the ultimate
goal, and having everyone who would like our music
to have heard it would be next.
