More recent versions of these books are now likely available.
The comments here represent my personal opinion having used the books for a number of years, I don't mean to advertise, just help other brewers.
The books are presented in no particular order, so don't get ideas OK ?!
Brew Your Own Real Ale At Home,
Graham Wheeler & Roger Protz, Published by C.A.M.R.A. Books, 1993. (CAMRA is the British Campaign for Real Ale, one of the most successful consumer movements in the world !)
- A nice book if you would like some insight into brewing British beers of all styles. Buy it for the recipes !
Home Brewing, The CAMRA Guide,
Graham Wheeler, Published by C.A.M.R.A. Books, 1993.
- This book baptised my into what brewing was really about ! It reflects a British perspective on homebrewing rather than what I might call the more open and adventurous American approach. It is a solid reference though. Graham and Charlie are probably distant cousins !!
The New Complete Joy Of Homebrewing,
Charlie Papazian, Published by AVON Books, New York, 199?.
- Charlie should need no introduction to American brewers ! He brings a sense of excitement and mystery into brewing beer & mead that few other authors are likely to match. He's been doing this for long enough (not bad for a nuclear scientist or whatever it was you claim to be Charlie !). If I ever need some upliftment in my brewing spirits I have two choices . . . drink a Pilsner Urquell or read a few paragraphs out of either of Charlie's books. I hope they inspire you the way have countless other aspirant brewers worldwide !
The Home Brewers Companion,
Charlie Papazian, Published by AVON Books, New York, 1994.
- For the more advanced brewer Charlie brings a lot of reference stuff together here. OK as a stand alone book too but if you're starting out get the NCJOH first !
The Complete Handbook Of Homebrewing,
Dave Miller, Published by Storey, 1994.
- This book taught me absolutely loads, I often found myself brewing with it held solidly in one hand ! Dave Miller provides a great intro to brewing and you will learn much about the process here, nothing fancy in language, just a solid guide. A more recent version than mine is definitely available.
