Creative Assessment Strategies

Introduction: The Web can bring to your classroom a new array of strategies that can support your current goals and efforts and can add a component that is only possible with the inclusion of the latest educational technologies. This is very much a hands-on workshop, so let's role up our sleeves and have some fun. But first let me show you a few things. Here's my homepage.

Rubrics: We often have projects that we have been using for years. We use checklists and rubrics to help guide our students to the successful completion of those projects. But did you know that you can create and store your rubrics online? This allows for you, your students and parents to have access to this important information from school or home. You can also update your rubric whenever you need. Here is an example of my latest use of rubrics that I have created and store online:

My Homepage

Note the different types of rubrics that I created. One is an old fashioned document that lists the requirements of success. But the others make use of online rubric builders. Now, let's take a look at those tools that can help you build and store these rubrics.

Landmark Rubric Builder

Let me first show you what I have done with this site. Now let's get you signed in and started on building a rubric. Once you have completed that rubric, explore another popular rubric builder.

RubiStar

Take some time after our workshop to explore how you might use either or both of these tools.

Online Quizzes: Guess what? You can now create, store, and conduct your quizzes online. Your goals might be the same as when you gave a paper quiz. Additionally, and this is what makes these sites so powerful, you can now use quizzes in new and creative ways. Let's look at an example of how I have used online quizzes.

The online quiz at this site was used to spur discussions. But you can build them so that there is individual interaction. You can create your own use of them. Let's build a quiz that you can use for your own students.

Also, consider using quizzes that are already built and out on the Web. Great examples can be found below:

Discussion Boards: The easiest way to conduct a discussion is to create and use an eBoard. Here are some examples: My eBoard

Here is where you can build your own: eBoard

Other Online Resources: Take some time to explore some of these other Web resources that can help in your assessment activities:

Identify at least one activity that you can use for assessment and share.

Creative Problem Solving: Bringing a number of Web resources together to produce projects that really drive your students to think is where you will want to eventually go. Here are example of my own units.
