INTRODUCTION TO STRUCTURES
With Mr. Sampson
WHO SAYS math and science has
to be taught using just paper, pencil, and text? real life applications
for math and science concepts? Who says students can’t have fun calculating
fractions, figuring angles, identifying stresses, and learning?
This course allows students to apply
and integrate skills acquired in math and science classes. By designing,
analyzing, and constructing model structures, students learn to apply abstract
concepts such as; stress, strain, force, gravity, and stability to solving
a technological problem.
Introduction to Structures is an
activity based, seventh grade unit meeting each day for one-half term (approximately
twenty-two periods).
The lessons and activities presented
in this course introduce students to:
-
Applying the Six -Step Problem - Solving
System to the solution of a technological problem.
-
The types of structures made by humans,
including bridges, buildings, dams, harbors, roads, towers, and tunnels.
-
The physical concepts of tension, compression,
bending and buckling.
-
Loads which act upon structures.
-
Applying the technique of optimization
to the design of structures.
-
The concepts and skills needed to construct
a scale model, simultaneously stimulating student creativity and inviting
them to experiment with structural concepts.
-
Computer aided design through the use
of Bridge Builder and Model Smart engineering software programs.
-
A vocabulary specific to bridges and
structural engineering.
-
The concept of efficiency as a means
of comparing like structures.
