Ken and Ruby Wright's Black Iris

There is so much more to gardening than planting seeds

and harvesting flowers. A true gardener feels reverence for

the soil upon which all life depends. He knows he is

working with life itself when he puts seeds or bulbs or

roots in the earth's breast and nurtures plants to maturity.

A flower is much like a child and needs the same sort

of loving care. I see the dewdrops on my pure white and

flawless rose and think of my little girls that I once gave

all of my love and care that now I share with my flowers.

In the heart of my roses, or in the blossoms of the

honeysuckle, I see the beauty that helps balance the scars

and blights that man causes. When a summer's day is done,

and dusk is dropping over the countryside, the earth the

sky, the soil and the plants. There is that poignant interlude

between the dusk and dark when the clumps of white roses

are spots of soft glowing beauty; when the pink phlox are

bright buttons against the dark hues of the other plants.

A garden is a peaceful spot where you can stop to reflect

and catch a glimpse of life's deeper meaning.
