Raymond Leslie Buell

Note : An author whose overall integrity leaves little room for doubt, could yet be misinformed and/or under-informed on important details.

A salient one : the original Prussia was a nation akin to the Lithuanians, (etc). The people had virtually nothing to do with anything specifically Teuton -- anyhow : they were not any nearer the Teuton than were the Slav Wends, Poles, Czechs (Bohemians), Slovaks, Ruthenians, etc -- all the mentioned groups having common origin known as the Aryan, or indogermanic, or indoeuropean (Indo-European) culture.

The Teutonic influence onto the area had begun on there having been a German religious order invited -- by the Polish Prince, Konrad of Masovia in 1228 -- said order called, more or less, The Knights of the Heart of Mary -- or something like. (This is from memory).

The purpose of that invitation was to Christianise the heathen Prussians. The arrived men of religion had proved exceedingly troublesome — (a long and intricate story). After all, nothing has left of the original Prussians but several Lutheran catechisms in the Old Prussian language -- which had no more to do with the German than had the akin to it Lithuanian -- or, on the other branch, the Polish.

The original Prussians having disappeared, the term 'Prussia' had become the name for the (largely) German migrants to these territories.

There had ever since been something problematic with this area, the national, territorial, political, religious, issues involved and often confounded — hence, apparently, the corrupting influence of those second-hand 'Prussians' onto the Germany proper, etc.
