L'auteur de la Grammaire Comparée, M. Franc̨:ois Bopp, est né à Mayence, le 14 septembre 1791. Il fit ses classes à Aschaffenbourg, où sa famille, à la suite des événements miliatires de cette époque, avait suivi l'Électeru. On remarqua de bonne heure la sagacité de son esprit, ses goûts sérieux et réfléchis, ainsi que sa prédilection pour l'étude des langues : non pas qu'il eût une aptitude particulière à les parler ou à les écrire ; mais son intention, en les apprenant, &ecute;tait de pénétrer par cette voie dans une connaissance plus intime de la nature et des lois de l'esprit humain. Après Leibniz, qui cut sur ce sujet taut de vues profondes et justes,¹ Herder avait apris à l'Allemagne à considéerer les langues autrement que comme de smples instruments destinés à l'échange des idées ;   (etc).

...     'For a time, everybody who wished to learn Sanskrit had to come to England.   (..)   The first minute and scholar-like comparison of the grammar of Sanskrit with that of Greek, Latin, Persian, and German was made by Francis Bopp, in 1816.¹ Other essays of his followed ; and in 1833 appeared the first volume of his Comparative Grammar of Sanskrit, Zend, Greek, Latin, Lithuanian, Slavonic, Gothic, and German. This work was not finished till nearly twenty years later, in 1852 ;¹ but it will form for ever the safe and solid foundation of Comparative Philology.²'

    ² This may sound a bold statement in 1888, when Bopp has been relegated to the limbo of the fallen great ones, and his etymologies are only quoted as warning examples of perverse ingenuity. From an historical point of view, however, his work has lost nothing of its greatness. He did what was possible in his time. Let us hope that the same may be said hereafter of those who came after him and carried on his work to higher perfection.
