Training Times & Locations for Summer 2009

Mondays and Wednesdays - Portland, Oregon

location: Outside the Mestre's Home! We've gone feral for the Summertime!
N. Fremont St. @ Mississippi Ave. Due North and across the river from Downtown Portland.

Taking advantage of the weather and evening light - all formal group trainings are being held outdoors until the Fall. Our regular training base-camp is located just off the corner of N. Fremont St. and Mississippi Ave. However!: On very short notice the trainings are relocated to various beautiful & awesome areas around town to bring some of the natural city environment into our capoeira experience. So don't be shy, come on out and explore capoeira angola. Recommended that new students make contact via email (info@palmaresnw.com) to get hip to where we are meeting that week.

Monday Evenings - 1.5 hour training session: from 7 to 8:30pm (Usually to Dark. - Jogo Alto (higher game) movements & fundamentals with music and game/ritual practice. Check below for info on training tuition.

Jogo Alto training refers to movements executed in a more open and upright standing position (as opossed to the more contracted, concealed, and close-to-ground manuevers of 'low play'). And because players are 'standing up' and more extended, the potential to fall down increases greatly. And so training in this modality explores falling and recovery skills as well as basic acrobatic flourishes and body inversions. Important to this type of training is the development powerful, serpentine, and fluidly efficient technique that invigorates the body & mind. Beginners are most welcome as every student trains at their own level and gets specific feedback from the mestre in order to improve. Game play, ritual, musical, and self-defense skills particular to this Jogo (game) are also regularly covered in each training.

New students explore fundamental solo drills and are introduced to fundamental movements by the mestre along with assisting senior students. They are introduced to proper & relaxed posture and breathing which allows energy to flow and technique to become tight. lessons include how to open up the senses and take in greater amounts of sensory information and organize this into developing game skills and body flexibility, timing, strength, stamina, and coordination. As they grasp the fundamentals new students are phased into regular training with more senior students.

Wednesday Evenings - 1.5 hour session: from 7pm to 8:30pm (Usually to Dark) movement and jogo Embaixo (lower game) fundamentals with additional music and game/ritual practice. Check below for info on training tuition.

Jogo Embaixo training refers to movements executed in more 'closed-up' and protected postures which are done closer to the ground utilizing the supports of the hands and head as well as the feet. Game play in this modality is fully immersed in traditional concepts of Malicia, Mandinga, and Malandragem - which develop and employ advantageous mental attitudes, sharp senses, and physical attributes of guile, trickery, cunning (and humor!) which are all hallmarks of outstanding Capoeira Angola. Beginners are most welcome - as every student trains at their own level and gets specific feedback from the mestre in order to improve. Game, ritual, and self-defense skills particular to this Jogo are also regularly covered in each training.

New students explore fundamental solo drills and learn how to pattern basic movement transitions which include defensive evasions, falling skills, breathing and coordinated relaxation. As they develop they are phased into training with more senior students.
