Contra Mestre Perere Invites you to come learn and play Capoeira Angola

Contramestre Perere and Mestre No

What is Capoeira Angola?

Capoeira Angola is a non-aggressive traditional Brazilian circle game of African origins which has an amazing variety of interactive elements - it is played by a pair of contestants together inside a circle of participants.

Capoeira includes fundamental components of dance, energetic and effussive and energetic percussion, acrobatics & theatrical display, a stunning variety of kicks and strikes, footsweeps, cartwheels, handstands, headbutts, and slippery sinuous and graceful escapes that please the eye and often brings many smiles of amazement from onlookers and participants alike.

Though it is played as a 'game' by its adepts - with set parameters of play and objectives angled towards winning the circle by out-manuevering your adversary with as soft-a-touch as possible, it is by no means merely an idle and ineffective pass-time. Training in Capoeira Angola offers an immersion into an awesome and adventurous worldview, a miraculous crossroads where potential meets possibility to create an adventurous and amazing spectacle to participate in and enjoy. Capoeira angola as taught here brings vigorous health and an agile, centered strength to the body, a relaxed, awake, and open demeanor to the mind, and a more settled and composed set to the spirit. Capoeira angola provides a traditional approach to many things, aspects of which include strategies and approaches for life, overcoming adversities of all shapes and sizes, and cultivating a positive and balanced perspective towards success in all things.

Capoeira angola offers a vigorous means towards deep play with ancient fighting skills set in tempo with traditional music and song-play which disarms much of the inherent aggressive antagonisms of modern martial arts practice - at its higher levels it affords not only viable, but downright practical and reliable time-tested tactics & techniques for self-defense against aggressive or violent encounters should the hour of need ever arise. Capoeira angola's approach to all things related to martial arts and self-defense are horizon-expanding and unique.

Learning Capoeira Angola is a fully enriching and engaging process, suitable for anyone who loves and energetic yet relaxed approach to things. It includes dance, martial arts, social sports, theater, and a healthy positive worldview appropriate for anyone regardless of age, race, gender. Lessons and training with a qualified and knowledgeable instructor include exploring a wide variety of Afro-Brazilian cultural history, music, natural philosophy, strategies for self-awareness & self-protection, graceful and fluid social conduct and etiquette through a focus on capoeira ritual and cosmology - and ofcourse: learning to play Capoeira with humor, wit, and style!

Our academy curriculum, which explores the full breadth and depth of this art-form - as a way of life, a path towards personal liberty, and means to deeper self-realization - is provided by the often beguiling, engaging, and profoundly knowledgeable Mestre No - who is grandmaster of Capoeira Angola Palmares and lives with his family in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. All classes in Portland, Oregon are taught by his dedicated and rambunctious disciple - Contra Mestre Perere.

Contramestre Perere's visit to Kyushu Island, Japan in April 2008 was awesome. the folks there are wonderful and here is a photo of Perer and instructor Jesse with members of Jesse's children's class in Japan.

April 2008: Capoeira students from all over Japan came to share and explore in a weekend workshop in capoeira angola with CM Perere.

And the event in Japan got a little article in the local newspaper. Right on!

We live in a free country, a democracy you say? Well I agree with the old saying "the price of Liberty is eternal vigilance". So I offer up here some good & fun quotes to dig into and meditate on regarding our continued and ensuing Freedom & Liberation - a thing we can only give to ourselves but which may be taken from us if we are negligent, distracted, and/or asleep. Recall that many many people awoke, rose up, and fought & died for their (and for their loved one's) Liberty over the ages, no one granted it to them. What might you do for yours?

"We dance around in a circle and suppose, the answer sits in the center and knows." - Robert Frost

"The first stage of seeing through the game can be a shocking enlightenment that leads either to a weary cynicism or Buddhism. The second stage of actually applying the insight to oneself can destroy the illusion of the soul and create a magician." - Peter Carroll

"The strategic adversary is fascism, the fascism in us all, in our heads and in our behavior, the fascism that causes us to love power, to desire the thing that dominates and exploites us." - Michael Foucault

"I do think it's not asking too much for you to engage those among you who are visionary and remove from your life those who offer you depression, despair and disrespect." - Nikki Giovanni

"For those who stubbornly seek freedom, there can be no more urgent task than to come to understand the mechanisms and practices of indoctrination. These are easy to perceive in the totalitarian societies, much less so in the system of 'brainwashing under freedom' to which we are subjected and which all too often we serve as willing or unwitting instruments." - Noam Chomsky

"The only intelligent way to discuss politics is on all fours." - Hakim Bey

"All the State knows is capture and the harvesting of power through capture. I have had my nerves rubbed bare over and over again this past week from this unfolding event (Hurricane Katrina & the disaster of New Orleans) and what it suggests for the rest of us in due time. Very interesting, very difficult manuevers to play out ahead for us all, and most definately the challenge is laid bare to rise to higher levels of energy and meaning as denial and further captures become pandemic. But release really only comes from one direction [inward] - the only direction there is against chains, sermons, armies, and Great Walls. Travelled far enough, deep enough, it eventually becomes it's opposite - the path then clears in all directions."
