2002 Uniform Update: Tiger Cubs

As of this fall, Tiger Cub uniform shirts are the blue Cub Scout shirt.  While supplies last, the orange Tiger cub shirts from previous years are still valid uniform.   The Den parents will have to decide which way they want to go on uniform shirts.

8/22/02
2002 The St. Michael School calendar and school supplies list are available in the Reference section to make the lists available to working parents and to replace lost pages.  There are Acrobat and MS Word versions. 5/24/02
Jan 1 02 Fee Increase Notice!  For the past 14 years, the registration fee for National Boy Scouts of America membership has been $7.  Beginning in January, 2003 it will be $10.

Pack membership fee totals will be probably be increased by $3 to cover the BSA increase.

Jan 10 We had our parents meeting and covered some pack committee business as well.  Some hands were raised and some backs were patted and when the dust settled -

Mr. Anderle moves from Treasurer to Committee Chair.
Mr. Belovich takes over as Treasurer.
Mr. Bellmore moves from Cubmaster to Assistant
Mrs. Galloway takes over Advancement/Awards Chair

Jan 17 Optional: Pinewood Derby Early Weight check, track preview and Car Talk.

Bring your completed cars (just kidding!) or all your parts and what you plan to use for weights to the school cafeteria between 6 & 7 pm to check your weight on the official scales and to see why the ground clearance specs in the instructions are so important.

Pick up some tips for either faster cars or faster paint drying times, ways to hide the weights, what you can/can't do to wheels, etc.

You can pick up extra cars there too for the "open" race or to replace ones that are broken already.  Will have 6 or so.

Jan-
Mar
We're starting the re-registration process!  Bring your checkbook to the Pinewood Derby or the Blue and Gold to take advantage of our early-bird offer:  You pay early, we won't bother you with a lot of phone calls!   I heard the $ amount for re-registration but I don't have it handy. 1/16/03
Jan 24 Pinewood Derby!  Sharpen those tools, get your drafting boards out!   If you're the "eager beaver" type, check out the Publications Forms & Maps page for rules, hints, and details from previous years.

Mr. Sevcik is putting the event committee together.  If you have a desired position, get on the committee so you won't get assigned to something different.

11/18/02
Jan 25 We're invited!  Ask Mr. Behringer about it!

On Saturday, Jan. 25, '03, St. Basil's Pack 652 and probably another pack will be renting the "Skate Station" facilities for a scout outing at a roller skate facility.  There will be a small charge per skater ($3) to help cover the facility and DJ. Add skate rent is $3 for inline and $1.50 for regular skates. We'll be gauging interest at the next few meetings. This is the day after our Pinewood Derby.

11/18/02
Feb 2 School Open House.  We need to put displays together. 1/16/03

Dec 13 Christmas Pack Meeting.  The Webelos 4 Den is making the arrangements.  See the newsletter

We'll meet in the Independence Old Elmwood Recreation Blg. for our Christmas Meeting.  This is the older building next to (north of) the pond.

Please bring a non-perishable food item that we'll take to the St. Catherine's Food Bank.

We'll have the regular meeting and then lots of activities - crafts, caroling, drinks and snacks.  We've even put in a request for a visit from Santa!

Signups for Breakfast in Bethlehem Service, Skating Outing, and Pinewood Derby planners.

Come prepared to nominate someone for Cubmaster, Ast. Cubmaster and Committee Chair!  Don't be caught without an idea of who you're going to point at when the time comes.  (It was in the spring of 1996 that Mr. Noble nominated Mr. Bellmore to be Ast. Cubmaster.)  Your nomination doesn't commit the nominee but it's a vote of confidence that the nominee is the kind of person you want setting the example and helping to lead your son in scouting.  Remember, there are plenty of high quality packs with women Cubmasters and Assistants.

We all have busy lives which largely revolve around our children and scouting can be a rewarding activity for families.  Do you part to nominate your leaders and then support them in their positions.

The "By the Book" position descriptions are available in our "Publications" section.  Or, right click & save as... on the link packpositions.pdf

12/11/02
Dec 15 Breakfast in Bethlehem.

Once again we'll be "Doing our Duty" by serving the pancake breakfast at this parish event.

The "shifts" are 9-10:30 and 11-12:30. You will be able to make the masses at the ends of the shifts.

We need scouts to serve (in uniform), do place settings, and cleanup. Not all parents need to stay but we need some to serve coffee.  The scouts are eager to show what they can do, guests are pleasantly surprised at the behavior of the wholesome young men, and event organizers are impressed with the boy's dedication and abilities.

Sign up for your preferred shift at the Dec 13 mtg. or you can just wait for Mr. Bellmore to call you!

12/09/02
Dec 1 Brecksville Christmas Parade and Tree Lighting.  We're group 36.  We'll meet between 3:30 and 3:45 - we'll be given our location later but it will probably be on Crestview Drive across from the Brecksville Library.   Park at the Library.

The Brecksville web site has details and maps.

The hardy few braved the elements to bring back the gold!  (We were rewarded with a gold trophy presented by the Mayor.)   I don't know if anyone stayed for the tree lighting ceremony - We grabbed some donuts and hot coco and then headed home.  It was great fun though.

12/04/02
Nov 16 Good Hike!   Light drizzle to keep us cooled off, plenty of snacks, a full-dress turkey and a beaver in the Nature Center, capped off with some creamy hot chocolate! 11/18/02
Nov 22 Thanksgiving Pack Meeting.  See Newsletter for details. 11/20/02
Nov 17 Scout Mass at 9:30 for Parvuli Dei Award Ceremony.

Show up - in uniform or not.  We sit in the left-front section with our families but you can sit in your usual place if you'd prefer.  Spread the word - Deacon Bob usually does a very nice ceremony during the mass - might motivate your scout or bring a tear to parents and grandparents.

10/31/02
Nov 16 University of Scouting will be at Cuyahoga Community College Western Campus on Nov. 16.   This is the annual training extravaganza for all scouting adults.  Check out the course offerings.  These are always good sources of information and materials.

GCC has posted the course schedule and brochure.
