Chapter 5 - Spirits

    "My lord, Komotte failed."
    "He did manage to rid us of the Moon warrior, did he not Kuroi?"
    "He did not, she lives and now her companions quest for the Sword of Light."
    "That weapon disappeared one hundred thousand years ago."
    "My lord you forget I can see all things in the past and many things present. The sword was last used almost fifteen hundred years ago by a young king named Authur. After his death it was eventually returned to the Holy Land."
    "Good it will stay there, for I know that the last gates to the Holy Land were sealed thousands of years ago."
    "I still worry my lord."

    Usagi lays asleep in her bed. She looks very peaceful, and she has a smile on her face. In a chair close beside her bed Mamoru sits holding her hand. His clothes are ragged and his hair is a mess. His sunken cheeks make the circles under his bloodshot eyes stand out. He looks as if he had been there for days. A half eaten plate of food sits beside the chair.
    Usagi's mother comes in and takes the plate, she doesn't look much better. Mamoru just sits there and starts playing with the ring on Usagi's finger.
    One by on the other girls start to arrive. After they are all there, Kioku also shows up.
    "Now what do we do?" Rei asked.
    "We must retrieve the five crystals." Kioku answered.
    "I know!" Rei shot back. "We all know that but how? We don't even know where they are, or anything about them."
    "There were originally eight crystals, and I am here to guide you." Everyone turned to face the speaker. She floated almost three feet of the ground. From the waist up she looked like a beautiful young girl. From the waist down she looked like a fish. Her skin was a deep blue. Her eyes were the same color, and so wet she almost looked like she was crying. He hair was long and blue mixed with green. It covered her bare back and her chest. "I am called Undine, I am the elemental spirit of water. But for you to best understand, I had better start from the beginning.
    "Long ago the Universe was nothing but darkness. The goddess of Light made order out of chaos and brought light to the worlds. She appointed eight spirits to protect the Universe, and created eight crystals to help them. Than she turned herself into a tree and went to sleep. I am one of the eight, the others are Salamando the spirit of fire, Gnome the spirit of earth, Jinn the spirit of wind, Dryad the spirit of wood, Luna the spirit of the moon, Wisp the spirit of light, and his older brother Shade the spirit of darkness.
    "Huh wait a minute!" Mina shouted. She turned and looked at the cats.
    "No" Luna almost laughed "I was only named for the moon spirit."
    "Oh!" Mina whispered.
    "What concerns me more," Rei interrupted "I not happy about having dealings with dark spirits."
    "You confuse dark with evil." Undine answered "Because evil cloaks itself in darkness and misuses its powers they are often confused, but you have used these powers yourself. The senshi of destruction is familiar with these powers." Everyone turns to look at Hotaru. "And you" with this she points at Mamoru. "Though you don't use dark powers, you hide in shadow and use it to your advantage."
    "And time is deeply woven into the dark fabric of space." Everyone turns to see Setsuna standing in the doorway. "Please continue."
    "Five hundred thousand years ago." Undine continued "the Dark Lyich appeared. He stole the crystal of darkness, and began a reign of terror. The crystal of wood was used to revive the Goddess of Light, but it was destroyed in the process. The goddess forged the Sword of Light and used it to seal the Dark Lyich in the dark world. Ever since he has been attempting to open the gate to the dark world so that he may return. He almost achieved this, but you destroyed the Dark Crystal before he can escape. Now only six crystals remain. You already have the Moon Crystal, which is the strongest by far. Now I am here to lead you to the Water Crystal."
    "Ok" Kioku exclaimed as he jumped out of his seat. "When do we go?"
    "You do not." Undine whispered. "You" Undine pointed at Ami. "You will be the one to find the crystal of water."
    "Me?" Ami asked.
    "Yes you, you will travel with me to the bottom of the world, where you will enter the Great Ice Cave. In this, one of the few places where magic grows strong, you must defeat the Frost Gigas, a huge monster that has powers almost as great as mine."
    "I am no great warrior, how can I do this?" Ami was looking at her feet while she said this.
    "I will help you, as I always have. I control all powers of water and I have taught you what you have needed thus far. Do you think that you have learned all I have to offer?"
    Ami just stood there "When do I leave?"
    "There is a geological expedition to the south pole leaving in two weeks. Because you must go alone I am afraid teleportation is out of the question, so you will sneak aboard the expedition."
    "What do I do about getting back?" Ami was really scared now.
    "You will be done before they leave."
    "I better get ready, I only have two weeks."
    Undine nodded than floated over Ami's head. "I will be with you until you finish your quest." There was a bright flash of light and Undine was gone.
    Ami turned and left. The others just sat there not knowing what to do. Mamoru turned back to Usagi and ran his finger through her hair. "It won't be long now, you'll be ok."
