CENTER OF MATHEMATICS, P4M--INSTITUT TEKNOLOGI BANDUNG

Promoting Multi-disciplinary sciences

The Center and Its Visions & Missions

In the past few years, the Center for Research on the Applications and Advancement of Mathematics, P4M - ITB has consistently shown its direction towards an applied profile by carefully moving into a multi-disiplinary center. This step aims to fulfil the
missions of P4M that are to pursue international level in scientific achievement, to contribute into national development through graduate research activities, and to link its research to real industrial problems. The list of P4M's researchers as well as its major activities clearly shows this changing profile. The successful Industrial Mathematics Week (IMW), organized by P4M in February 1998, marked this step. This IMW, a workshop where real industrial problems are being solved, was the first of such an activity conducted in Indonesia. The activity was continued by a second IMW to be held in July 2000. In these Industrial Mathematics Weeks, the center intends to narrow down the gap between university research and industrial practices. The task to create the linkages between scientists, engineers, and industry practitioners requires a solid group in which P4M is currently and actively building this group consisting local and international scientists. This direction is accordance with the need of Indonesian society and to answer the urgency of globalisation issue in general and an autonomy issue of universities, in particular.
