THE UPSTAGE
This is the history and reference file of the Upstage company, first formed by Lawrence Tobin in 1967 at Coral Gables' Studio M as home for his "Best of Off-Broadway Series."  After the demise of that venerable institution Tobin built the Upstage theatre on the second floor of what was then the Coconut Grove Post Office at 3356 Virginia St. (opening January 1968.)  His Lawrence Tobin Productions, Inc. operated the venue under his aegis as artistic producer-director until succeeded by a non-profit,tax-exempt entity, Repertory Library Theatre, Inc. in 1973 when the leasehold was sold to the ill-fated Public Trust Theatre, Inc.  Repertory Library Theatre continued to produce plays under the Upstage name until the major local newspaper could no longer be relied upon to supply competent coverage.  This page will attempt to document the plays, performers and others associated with its history and will welcome any contributions from visitors at admin@theupstage.com
