9 Sqn BBQ & Get Together

9SQN FAMILY BBQ - WILLIAMTOWN, NSW - 2 JUN 01

Hi Guys, Girls,

We are arranging a very informal family barbecue at Williamtown, NSW on the
afternoon/evening of Saturday, 2 Jun 01. The venue will be Fighter World,
a privately managed aircraft museum with integrated social facilities,
located near the main entrance to RAAF Base Williamtown. This is where the
fighter squadrons hold their dining-in nights these days, in lieu of highly
expensive civilian controlled, corporatized messes!

On 2/3 June, John Hazelwood, Rex Budd, Frank Clough and myself will attend
Fighter World to sign about 700 prints of the recently completed painting
of 'THE BUSHRANGERS' in action near the Long Hai mountains in Phuoc Tuy
Province, South Vietnam. Unfortunately, Norm Goodall cannot attend but will
sign the prints before they are brought to Willy by Peter Cobb of Aerial
Combat Editions (the Publisher) and Artist, Barry Spicer - both will attend the function.
>
We did not initiate this project but decided to accept the opportunity to
become involved for the prospective financial benefit of our embryo unit
Association. The painting is a Limited Edition of very high artistic
quality, accompanied by a numbered Certificate of Authenticity and a very
moving poetic tribute, emphasizing the teamwork nature of the gunship
project - it will have very strong sentimental appeal for many and not just
those involved in Vietnam gunship operations. Prints will be available for
purchase at the 2 June gathering for $10 less than the $275 purchase price,
which includes GST and postage. The embryo No. 9 Squadron Association will
receive $50 for every print sold of the 600 copy Limited Edition and 60
Artist Proofs. A further 40 non-saleable copies will be made available to
the Association for presentation, at our discretion, to various political
figures, military organizations, historical institutions, etcetera where
this gesture might appropriately perpetuate the image of a proud fighting unit.

Things are happening re the embryo Association, website, etcetera, albeit
much slower than expected and I ask for your patience
in this regard. More to follow in a bulletin to be widely distributed (via
internet and post) by end of May - please spread the word to those not on
email. This bulletin will include instructions concerning ordering of
prints of 'THE BUSHRANGERS' painting - I ask that you do not send me order
details beforehand because I am overwhelmed with all that we are trying to achieve.

Back to the function bit. Catering costs will be about $12 per head and we
need to provide a few eskies for sale of iced beer/softies,
at cost. The aircraft display bit closes at 1600 hours daily and we will
then begin social proceedings. Arrival an hour or 2 earlier would allow big
and little kids to enjoy crawling over various aircraft. This happening is
intended to relate to the whole Squadron (not just the Vietnam bit) so
please attend, if practicable, and do canvas others not on email who live
within reasonable reach of Willy. Remember, we are near the start of winter
and airfields are pretty bleak places; so, some warm outdoors gear would
be advisable.

We will be absent from home for the next few days but back by 22/23 May.
Kindly respond by email or phone with numbers attending the function, as I
have to firm up catering arrangements by 28/29 May. Our present email
address is : bddirou@nelsonbay.com but this will soon change to:
bddirou@bigpond.com and home telephone is (02) 4997 3242, with an
answering machine.

We are being asked for copies of the 9 SQN nominal roll. Due to the
privacy act I am reluctant to give your names out to anyone so I would like
you all to let me know whether or not you are happy for me to give your
details to other former members of 9 SQN. I will then note it on your
details whether or not these details may be given out to other members.

> Looking forward to seeing at least some of you again pretty soon.

Cheers for now,

BD

How the "POM" got his Marching Orders

How to Impress Flt Lt Bob Matthews Defence Officer Williamtown

If ya that bored to be reading this then hopefully you'll read on, its about my posting to Vietnam and the reasoning I felt was behind it.
Started back in early 1970 as i wasn't posted to Phan-Rang till March so therefore we have to travel back a couple of months, you know waiting for this posting caused more anxiouty then anything, watching and waiting your turn and all the possible reasons why you might not get there, mates being posted off other courses that finished after yours making you feel that maybe I wasn't good enough, and all that kind of rott.
Well heres how my posting got speeded up i hope that in away it wasn't the real reason, but who knows.
Anyway heres the story 2 Firies from Williamtown were facing civvie charges and they where to be heard in Newcastle local Court and the POM was chosen as the Driver for this particular duty the officer in charge was our old mate (?) Flt Lt Bob Matthews, my job drive the Four of us into town in a you beaut Gladiator (4 wheel drive) vehicle anyway all's going well until we managed to get this what POM thought long enough straight to overtake the slower vehicle all was going well until outer the far but not far enough corner appeared a bigger I'm mean much bigger vehicle than what we were sitting in, and closing at high speed making the POM take some pretty evasive action to survive talk about four blood drained faces, shit wasn't the word to descibe the scene, but i kinda noticed that something that i had been waiting for, for so long was now hurried and processed as fast as possible.
" The POM was posted ".
I suppose our old mate (i use this term losely of course) couldn't get rid of me fast enough better i hassel a few gooks then succeed in getting rid of him.
My posting appeared 4-5 days later.
Do I get Free lifetime Membership for my efforts or what?

Offering the Hand of Friendship
Them Good Old American Boys

Email Denny Here .

Last week just emailed Denny out of the blue and kinda got a responce in the future i'll keep adding to this conversation and perhaps a photo or two, Im sure that helped to start to open a few doors to some old and new friendships from our American Brothers

Hi Bob.
I am trying to place you from Phan Rang. Did we work on a operation together? I hope when you get home you drop me a line. After all the time has passed it is hard to put faces with names sometimes. I was about 3 miles east of Phan Rang air base at that small fire base at the foot of the mountains. The Koreans were great guy's to work with. I now do a radio show from my own studios, covering all that great jazz and swing music. Looking forward to hearing from you. Denny F
Gday Denny,
Well old mate you will proberly find it a little hard to place me, i was attached to 2sqn RAAF at Phan-Rang 4-4-70 till 4-4-71 and to be honest i don't recall meeting any of your guys on the base, our job as you proberly have noticed by our web site is mainly perimeter defence which included patroling and night ambushes up to 5 kilometers outside the wire,
over the last couple of months i have managed to rekindle a few friendships with the boys of heavy weapons, its been really great to think that after all this time ( about thirty years and half a planet apart this has been accomplished ) i apologise for being a little slow replying but the son and myself have been pretty crook the last couple of days some kind of virus going around.
Like yourself i too have an interest in music mostly Rockabilly and a little swing great stuff to twirl those gals to.
Anyway Denny please stay in contact
the POM (Bob Cornwell)

Hello once again Bob. Glad you are feeling better. Robert send me a list of your favorite artist of the 60S. My collection is one of the largest around when it comes to 50/60/70 to about 85. You see in my bz, you have to be a jack of all music. I have been doing the radio thing going back to 1970 when I got home from Nam. I look at it this way, I could have been a sniper or a DJ, so I took the easy way out. I will look around for some photos and e-mail them to you. And yes I have a great sense of humor, to be in my BZ you better. I cant spell worth a dam. See you down the road Bob. Denny Farrell.

No doubt this was in many ADGie minds
